Key Components:

  • Digital Display: Shows measurement readings, units, and mode indicators.
  • POWER Button: Turns the device on or off.
  • HOLD Button: Freezes the current reading on the display.
  • REC Button: Activates data recording functions (e.g., Max/Min values).
  • ZERO Button: Resets the reading to zero for relative measurements.
  • MODE (DC/AC SET) Button: Switches between DC (direct current) and AC (alternating current) magnetic field measurement modes. Also used for setting parameters.
  • Probe Input: Port for connecting the separate measurement probe.
  • Battery Compartment: Located on the back for battery installation.
  • Kickstand: Integrated stand on the back for convenient viewing.

5. Setup

5.1. Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device (refer to Figure 4.2).
  2. Slide or unscrew the cover to open the compartment.
  3. Insert the required batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Replace the battery compartment cover securely.

5.2. Connecting the Probe

  1. Identify the probe input port on the main unit.
  2. Carefully insert the connector of the separate probe (Figure 4.3) into the probe input port until it clicks into place.
  3. Ensure the connection is firm to prevent intermittent readings.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1. Powering On/Off

  • Press the POWER button to turn the device on. The display will illuminate.
  • To turn off the device, press and hold the POWER button until the display turns off.

6.2. Selecting Measurement Mode (DC/AC)

  • After powering on, press the MODE (DC/AC SET) button to toggle between DC (Direct Current) and AC (Alternating Current) magnetic field measurement modes.
  • The selected mode will be indicated on the display.

6.3. Taking a Measurement

  1. Select the appropriate measurement mode (DC or AC).
  2. Position the tip of the separate probe near the magnetic field source you wish to measure.
  3. Read the magnetic field strength value displayed on the screen. The unit of measurement (e.g., Gauss or Tesla) will also be shown.

6.4. Using the ZERO Function

  • To perform a relative measurement or compensate for ambient magnetic fields, press the ZERO button.
  • The display will show '0' or a very small value, allowing you to measure changes from that baseline.

6.5. Using the HOLD Function

  • During a measurement, press the HOLD button to freeze the current reading on the display.
  • Press HOLD again to release the reading and resume live measurements.

6.6. Using the REC (Record) Function

  • Press the REC button to activate the recording mode. The device may display 'MAX' or 'MIN' indicators.
  • The device will continuously monitor and store the maximum and minimum magnetic field values detected.
  • Press REC again to cycle through MAX, MIN, and exit recording mode.

7. Maintenance

7.1. Cleaning

  • Wipe the device and probe with a soft, dry cloth.
  • For stubborn dirt, use a slightly damp cloth with mild detergent, then dry thoroughly.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals.

7.2. Battery Replacement

  • When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries promptly.
  • Follow the battery installation steps outlined in Section 5.1.

7.3. Storage

  • When not in use for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
  • Store the device and probe in the provided hard case in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your VOLTCRAFT GM-70, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Device does not power on.Dead or incorrectly installed batteries.Check battery polarity and replace batteries if necessary.
Inaccurate or unstable readings.Probe not properly connected; strong external interference; device not zeroed.Ensure probe is securely connected. Move away from other strong magnetic sources. Use the ZERO function before measurement.
Display shows 'OL' or 'OVERLOAD'.Magnetic field strength exceeds the device's measurement range.Move the probe further away from the source or use a device with a higher measurement range if available.

If the problem persists after trying these solutions, please contact VOLTCRAFT customer support.
