Setup

1. Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully remove the SM480V from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage. Ensure all components listed in the packing list are present.

2. Battery Installation

Locate the battery compartment on the back of the unit. Insert the required batteries (typically AA or AAA, refer to the battery compartment label) ensuring correct polarity. Close the compartment securely.

3. Connecting Hoses

Connect the Yellow Jacket 22985 Hoses to the appropriate ports on the manifold. The high-pressure hose (red) connects to the high-side port, the low-pressure hose (blue) to the low-side port, and the service hose (yellow) to the vacuum pump or refrigerant tank.

4. Powering On

Press and hold the power button until the display illuminates. The unit will perform a self-test before displaying readings.

5. Wireless Connection with Scale

To connect the manifold with a wireless scale for refrigerant charging, follow these steps:

Video 1: How to connect the manifold with a wireless scale for use. This video demonstrates the process of wirelessly connecting the digital manifold to a refrigerant scale, including setting the desired refrigerant charge weight.

6. Wireless Connection with Vacuum Gauge

For accurate vacuum measurements, connect a compatible wireless vacuum gauge. The manifold display will indicate a successful connection.

Video 2: How to connect EMG-40Vpro with vacuum gauge VGW-mini for measuring. This video illustrates the steps to connect a digital manifold with a vacuum gauge for precise vacuum measurements.

Operating Instructions

1. Display Overview

The digital display shows real-time pressure readings for high and low sides, saturation temperatures, and micron vacuum readings. Navigate through different screens using the arrow buttons.

2. Pressure Measurement

  1. Connect the red hose to the high-side service port and the blue hose to the low-side service port of the HVAC/R system.
  2. Ensure all manifold valves are closed.
  3. Open the service ports on the system.
  4. The manifold will display the high and low-side pressures.

3. Vacuum Measurement

  1. Connect the yellow service hose to a vacuum pump.
  2. Connect the manifold to the system as described in pressure measurement.
  3. Open the manifold valves to the system and start the vacuum pump.
  4. Monitor the micron gauge reading on the display. Evacuate the system to the desired vacuum level.
  5. Close the manifold valves and turn off the vacuum pump. Observe the micron reading for any rise, indicating a leak.

4. Refrigerant Charging/Recovery

  1. Connect the yellow service hose to the refrigerant tank (for charging) or recovery machine (for recovery).
  2. If using a wireless scale, ensure it is connected and calibrated.
  3. Follow system-specific procedures for charging or recovery, monitoring the manifold pressures and refrigerant weight (if using a scale).
  4. Close all valves and disconnect hoses once the process is complete.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning the Unit

Wipe the exterior of the manifold with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure no moisture enters the ports or display area.

2. Sensor Calibration

The pressure and temperature sensors are factory calibrated. If you suspect inaccurate readings, contact Fieldpiece customer support for service or recalibration instructions. The micron gauge may require periodic zeroing in a deep vacuum.

3. Battery Replacement

Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display. Use only the specified battery type.

4. Hose Care

Inspect hoses regularly for cracks, leaks, or damage. Replace worn hoses immediately to prevent refrigerant loss and ensure accurate readings. Keep hose connections clean.

5. Storage

Store the manifold in its protective case in a clean, dry environment when not in use. Avoid extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Unit does not power onDead or incorrectly installed batteriesReplace batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
Inaccurate pressure readings
  • Leaking hoses or connections
  • Sensor contamination
  • Incorrect refrigerant selected
  • Check all connections for leaks.
  • Contact customer support for sensor cleaning/calibration.
  • Verify the correct refrigerant type is selected on the manifold.
Wireless connection failure
  • Out of range
  • Interference
  • Accessory not powered on
  • Move manifold closer to the accessory.
  • Minimize other wireless devices nearby.
  • Ensure the accessory (scale/vacuum gauge) is powered on and in pairing mode.
Micron gauge reads "OL" or erratic
  • Sensor contaminated
  • Not in deep vacuum
  • Clean the micron sensor according to manufacturer guidelines or contact support.
  • Ensure the system is under a deep vacuum for accurate readings.
