Figure 1: The DJO 01A-L AIRCAST SP Walker Short Pneumatic Safety Shoe. This image displays the complete grey short pneumatic walker boot with its green adjustable straps and the 'AIRCAST' logo visible on the side.

  1. Prepare the Boot: Unfasten all straps and open the liner.
  2. Position Foot: Place your foot and leg into the boot, ensuring your heel is seated firmly at the back.
  3. Secure Liner: Wrap the soft liner around your foot and leg, securing it snugly but not too tightly.
  4. Fasten Straps: Begin fastening the straps from the bottom (toes) upwards (calf). Ensure each strap is secure but allows for comfortable circulation.
  5. Inflate Air Cells: The boot features a pre-inflated anterior air cell and two adjustable air cells at the malleoli (ankle bones). Locate the inflation bulbs/valves. Inflate the air cells until you feel comfortable compression and support. Do not overinflate. The air cells should provide a "total contact" fit.
  6. Check Fit: Stand up and walk a few steps to assess the fit and comfort. Adjust straps and air cell inflation as needed. The boot should feel secure and supportive without causing pressure points or discomfort.

5. Operating Instructions

Once the SP Walker is properly applied, you can begin ambulating as directed by your healthcare professional.

  • Walking: The low rocker sole is designed to promote a more natural gait. Walk slowly and deliberately, focusing on a smooth heel-to-toe motion.
  • Adjustments: Periodically check the fit of the boot. If swelling changes, you may need to adjust the inflation of the air cells or the tightness of the straps.
  • Support: Use crutches or other assistive devices as recommended by your healthcare provider, especially during the initial stages of recovery.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: The soft goods (liner) can be hand washed in cold water with mild soap. Air dry completely before reattaching to the boot. Do not machine wash or tumble dry.
  • Shell Cleaning: Wipe the rigid shell with a damp cloth and mild disinfectant. Do not immerse the shell in water.
  • Storage: Store the boot in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the boot for any signs of wear, damage, or air leakage from the cells. If any issues are found, contact your supplier or healthcare professional.
