5. Setup Instructions

Follow these steps to set up your KVM HDMI USB Extender.

5.1. Point-to-Point Connection

  1. Connect Source to Sender (TX):
    • Connect an HDMI cable from your source device's HDMI output to the HDMI IN port on the Sender (TX) unit.
    • Connect the provided USB-A to USB-A cable from your source device's USB port to the USB IN (PC) port on the Sender (TX) unit.
  2. Connect Display and Peripherals to Receiver (RX):
    • Connect an HDMI cable from the HDMI OUT port on the Receiver (RX) unit to your display device's HDMI input.
    • Connect your USB keyboard and mouse to the USB ports on the Receiver (RX) unit.
  3. Connect Sender (TX) and Receiver (RX) with Ethernet Cable:
    • Connect a single CAT5/5e/6/7 Ethernet cable from the LAN TX port on the Sender (TX) unit to the LAN RX port on the Receiver (RX) unit. Ensure the cable length does not exceed 120 meters.
  4. Power On:
    • Connect the two DC 5V power adapters to the DC 5V ports on both the Sender (TX) and Receiver (RX) units, then plug them into power outlets.
  5. Verify the signal lights on both units are active, indicating a successful connection.

5.2. One-to-Many Receiver Connection (via Ethernet Switch)

For connecting one source to multiple displays and KVM workstations, an Ethernet switch is required.

  1. Connect Source to Sender (TX): Follow steps 5.1.1 for connecting your source device to the Sender (TX) unit.
  2. Connect Sender (TX) to Ethernet Switch: Connect the LAN TX port of the Sender (TX) unit to an available port on your Ethernet router or switch using an Ethernet cable.
  3. Connect Receiver(s) (RX) to Ethernet Switch: For each display and KVM workstation, connect the LAN RX port of a Receiver (RX) unit to an available port on the same Ethernet router or switch using an Ethernet cable.
  4. Connect Display and Peripherals to each Receiver (RX): For each Receiver (RX) unit, follow steps 5.1.2 to connect your display device, USB keyboard, and mouse.
  5. Power On: Connect the DC 5V power adapters to all Sender (TX) and Receiver (RX) units, then plug them into power outlets.
  6. Verify all signal lights are active.

Important Cable Information: Use high-quality CAT5/5e/6/7 STP or UTP Ethernet cables for optimal performance. For best video quality, especially over longer distances, CAT6 or higher cables are recommended. Obsolete CAT5 and CAT5e cables may impact video quality.

6. Operating Instructions

Once the setup is complete and all units are powered on, the KVM extender will automatically establish the connection. The remote display should show the video output from the source device, and the connected USB keyboard and mouse will control the source device.

The system operates transparently, meaning your remote keyboard and mouse function as if they were directly connected to the source computer. No additional software or drivers are typically required for basic KVM functionality.

7. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your AGPTEK KVM Extender, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the units. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol sprays.
  • Ventilation: Ensure the units are placed in a well-ventilated area to prevent overheating. Do not block any ventilation openings.
  • Cable Management: Keep cables neatly organized and avoid sharp bends or excessive tension, which can damage the cables or ports.
  • Power Supply: Use only the provided DC 5V power adapters. Using unauthorized power adapters may damage the device and void the warranty.
  • Environment: Avoid exposing the units to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your KVM Extender, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No video on the remote display.
  • Loose HDMI or Ethernet cable connections.
  • Incorrect power supply.
  • Incompatible resolution or refresh rate.
  • Damaged cables.
  • Check and re-secure all HDMI and Ethernet cables.
  • Ensure both TX and RX units are powered on with the correct 5V adapters.
  • Try a different HDMI cable.
  • Ensure your source device's resolution is set to 1080p@60Hz or lower.
Keyboard/mouse not responding.
  • Loose USB cable connection.
  • Incompatible USB device (e.g., 2.4G wireless kit).
  • USB 1.1 compatibility issue.
  • Check and re-secure the USB-A to USB-A cable between the source and TX unit, and the keyboard/mouse to the RX unit.
  • Ensure your keyboard/mouse is a wired USB 1.1 device or a Bluetooth device with a USB dongle. 2.4G wireless kits are not supported.
  • Try a different keyboard/mouse.
Poor video quality or flickering.
  • Low-quality or damaged Ethernet cable.
  • Excessive cable length.
  • Network congestion (in one-to-many setup).
  • Ethernet switch speed limitation.
  • Use high-quality CAT6 or CAT7 Ethernet cables.
  • Ensure cable length is within the 120-meter limit.
  • If using an Ethernet switch, ensure it is a Gigabit (1000 Mbps) switch. Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) switches may cause performance issues, especially with video.
  • Consider creating a VLAN for the KVM traffic if network collapse occurs in complex network environments.
Network instability or collapse (in one-to-many setup).
  • High network traffic from KVM extenders without proper isolation.
  • If possible, configure a Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) specifically for the KVM extender traffic to isolate it from other network activities.
