Model: RK370.552 | Color: Metro Blue

1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Recaro J1 Select Child Seat. This manual provides essential information for the correct installation, safe operation, and proper maintenance of your child seat. Please read this manual thoroughly before use and keep it in a safe place for future reference. Ensuring your child's safety is paramount, and adherence to these instructions is crucial.

The Recaro J1 Select is designed to provide comfort and protection for children from approximately 12 months up to 12 years old (9 kg to 36 kg, and up to 125 cm in height). It features advanced safety and comfort technologies to adapt to your child's growth.

2. Safety Guidelines

  • Always secure the child seat using the vehicle's 3-point seatbelt as instructed.
  • Ensure the child's weight and height are within the recommended limits for the seat's configuration (9-36 kg, up to 125 cm).
  • Never leave a child unattended in the child seat.
  • Do not use the child seat if it has been involved in an accident, even if there is no visible damage. Internal damage may compromise safety.
  • Regularly check that all straps, buckles, and adjustment mechanisms are functioning correctly and are securely fastened.
  • Ensure the child seat is installed in a forward-facing position only.
  • Avoid placing bulky items or accessories that could interfere with the seat's safety features.

3. Product Features

3.1. Advanced Impact Protection

The Recaro J1 Select features a highly impact-absorbing surround head support cushion designed to protect the child's head. Large side protection elements are integrated to support the head, shoulders, waist, and thighs, offering comprehensive safety in the event of a side impact.

3.2. Enhanced Comfort and Ventilation

For optimal comfort, especially during longer journeys, the seat incorporates 'ventilation holes' and an 'air mesh cover'. These features promote airflow, reducing heat buildup and moisture, ensuring a comfortable experience for the child.

3.3. High-Density Cushioning for Correct Posture

3.4. One-Touch Headrest and Harness Adjustment

The head support height can be adjusted in 7 stages to accommodate your child's growth. A single lever on the back allows for one-touch adjustment of both the head support and shoulder belt height simultaneously, simplifying the process as your child grows.

3.5. Recaro HERO Harness System

Recaro's unique HERO harness system is designed to prevent the shoulder belts from twisting. Long grip pads extend from the shoulders to the chest, securely holding the child's body and enhancing safety and comfort.

3.6. Seamless Child to Junior Seat Conversion

The seat allows for a seamless transition from child seat mode (with 5-point harness) to junior seat mode (using vehicle seatbelt) without the need to remove any parts. This design eliminates concerns about losing components during conversion.

4. Setup and Installation

4.1. Unpacking and Initial Inspection

  1. Carefully remove all components from the packaging.
  2. Inspect the child seat for any signs of damage. Do not use if damaged.
  3. Ensure all parts listed in the product manual (separate document) are present.

4.2. Child Seat Mode Installation (9-18 kg)

This mode uses the integrated 5-point harness system and the vehicle's 3-point seatbelt for securing the child seat.

  1. Place the child seat on the vehicle's rear seat, ensuring it is forward-facing.
  2. Route the vehicle's 3-point seatbelt through the designated guides on the child seat. Refer to the labels on the seat for correct belt path.
  3. Pull the vehicle seatbelt tight to eliminate any slack, ensuring the child seat is firmly secured and does not move more than 2.5 cm (1 inch) in any direction.
  4. Ensure the 5-point harness is correctly adjusted to your child's height (see Section 5.2).

4.3. Junior Seat Mode Conversion (15-36 kg)

For older children (typically 15 kg and above, or 125 cm in height), the child seat can be converted into a high-back booster seat. This involves removing the internal 5-point harness system and using the vehicle's 3-point seatbelt to secure the child directly.

  1. Follow the instructions in the detailed product manual to safely store or remove the 5-point harness components. The design allows for this without detaching parts, minimizing loss.
  2. Ensure the headrest is adjusted to the correct height so the vehicle's shoulder belt rests properly across the child's shoulder, not on the neck.
  3. When the child is seated, route the vehicle's 3-point seatbelt through the designated guides on the junior seat and buckle it.
  4. Verify that the lap belt is low on the child's hips, touching the thighs, and the shoulder belt crosses the center of the shoulder and chest.

  2. Bring the two buckle tongues together and insert them into the buckle until you hear a click.
  3. Pull the harness adjustment strap to tighten the harness until it is snug against the child's body. Ensure you can only fit one finger between the harness and the child's collarbone.

5.2. Adjusting Headrest and Harness Height

As your child grows, the headrest and harness height must be adjusted. Locate the adjustment lever on the back of the child seat. Squeeze the lever and slide the headrest up or down to the desired position. The shoulder straps will adjust simultaneously. Ensure the shoulder straps are at or just above your child's shoulders.

5.3. Using Cup Holders

The included cup holders can be attached to either side of the child seat. Simply slide them into the designated slots until they click into place. They are designed to accommodate various bottle and cup shapes.

6. Maintenance and Care

6.1. Cleaning Instructions

  • Fabric Covers: The fabric covers are removable and can be hand-washed with mild detergent and cold water. Do not machine wash, bleach, or tumble dry. Air dry completely before reattaching.
  • Plastic Parts: Wipe plastic parts with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Harness Straps: Wipe straps with a damp cloth. Do not immerse in water or use harsh chemicals, as this may weaken the webbing.

6.2. Storage

When not in use, store the child seat in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not place heavy objects on the seat during storage.

7. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter. If you experience a problem not listed here, please contact customer support.

  • Harness too tight/loose: Ensure the harness adjustment strap is pulled correctly to tighten, or the release button is pressed to loosen. Verify the headrest and shoulder strap height are appropriate for your child's size.
  • Seatbelt difficult to tighten: Check that the vehicle's seatbelt is routed correctly through all designated guides and that there are no twists in the belt.
  • Child uncomfortable: Recheck all adjustments, including headrest height and harness tension. Ensure no clothing or objects are interfering with the child's comfort.
