- Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding-type plug. A polarized plug has two blades with one wider than the other. A grounding-type plug has two blades and a third grounding prong. The wide blade or the third prong are provided for your safety. If the provided plug does not fit into your outlet, consult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet.
- Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched, particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus.
- Only use attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer.
- Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time.
- Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required when the apparatus has been damaged in any way, such as power-supply cord or plug is damaged, liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the apparatus, the apparatus has been exposed to rain or moisture, does not operate normally, or has been dropped.

Unpacking and Inspection
Carefully remove the TB12 unit from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage that may have occurred during shipping. If any damage is found, contact your dealer immediately.
Front Panel Overview

Front view of the Warm Audio TB12 Tone Beast Microphone Preamp, showcasing its controls and inputs.
- Input Gain Knob: Controls the input level of the microphone or instrument signal.
- Output Level Knob: Adjusts the overall output level of the preamp.
- Impedance Switch: Selects between 600 Ohm and 150 Ohm input impedance for microphones.
- Capacitor Switch: Toggles between two different capacitor types for tonal variation.
- Op-Amp Switch: Selects between two discrete op-amp circuits (1731 or 918) for different sonic characteristics.
- Transformer Switch: Engages or bypasses the output transformer for additional tonal shaping.
- High-Pass Filter (HPF) Switch: Activates a high-pass filter to remove low-frequency rumble.
- Phantom Power (+48V) Switch: Supplies +48V phantom power for condenser microphones.
- Pad Switch: Engages a -20dB pad for high-level input signals.
- Phase Switch: Inverts the phase of the input signal.
- Instrument Input (DI): 1/4" TS input for connecting instruments directly.
- VU Meter: Displays the output level of the preamp.
Rear Panel Connections
The rear panel features the main XLR microphone input, balanced XLR line output, and the power input.
- XLR Microphone Input: Connect your microphone here.
- XLR Line Output: Connect this output to your audio interface, mixer, or other recording equipment.
- Power Input: Connect the supplied AC power cable here.
Initial Connection
- Ensure the TB12 is powered off.
- Connect your microphone to the XLR Microphone Input on the rear panel.
- Connect the XLR Line Output to an available input on your audio interface or mixer.
- If using an instrument, connect it to the 1/4" Instrument Input on the front panel.
- Connect the power cable to the Power Input and then to a suitable AC outlet.
- Power on the TB12 unit.
Operation
Basic Signal Flow
The signal enters the TB12 via the microphone XLR input or the front panel instrument input. It then passes through the selected op-amp and capacitor stages, followed by the gain and output level controls, and finally exits through the XLR line output. The transformer can be engaged or bypassed at the output stage.
Adjusting Gain and Output
- Use the Input Gain Knob to set the initial level of your microphone or instrument. Aim for a healthy signal level on the VU meter without clipping.
- The Output Level Knob controls the final output level sent to your recording device. This allows you to drive the input stage for coloration while maintaining a safe output level.
Tonal Shaping Options
- Impedance Switch: Experiment with 600 Ohm for a more vintage tone or 150 Ohm for a more modern, open sound, especially with dynamic and ribbon microphones.
- Capacitor Switch: Select between two different capacitor types. One typically offers a cleaner, more transparent sound, while the other provides a warmer, more colored tone.
- Op-Amp Switch: Choose between the 1731 and 918 discrete op-amps. The 1731 generally provides a smoother, more vintage character, while the 918 offers a faster, more aggressive response.
- Transformer Switch: Engaging the output transformer adds a subtle saturation and harmonic richness, often described as a "vintage" sound. Bypassing it results in a cleaner, more direct signal path.
Utility Functions
- High-Pass Filter (HPF): Activate this switch to reduce unwanted low-frequency noise such as rumble from air conditioning or stage vibrations.
- Phantom Power (+48V): Engage this switch only when using condenser microphones that require +48V phantom power. Ensure the microphone is connected before activating.
- Pad: If your input signal is too hot and causing clipping even with the gain knob at its lowest setting, engage the -20dB pad.
- Phase: Use the phase switch to invert the polarity of the input signal. This can be useful for correcting phase issues when combining multiple microphones on a single source.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Ventilation: Ensure that the ventilation openings are not blocked to prevent overheating.
- Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the unit in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Servicing: Do not attempt to service the unit yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified Warm Audio service personnel.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No audio output | Power not connected; Cables incorrectly connected; Gain/Output knobs too low; Phantom power not engaged for condenser mic. | Check power connection; Verify all XLR and instrument cables are securely connected; Increase Input Gain and Output Level; Engage +48V phantom power if using a condenser microphone. |
| Distorted audio | Input signal too hot; Output level too high for receiving device; Faulty cable. | Engage the -20dB Pad; Reduce Input Gain; Lower Output Level; Try a different cable. |
| Hum or noise | Ground loop; Faulty cable; Nearby electrical interference. | Ensure all equipment is on the same power circuit; Try a ground lift adapter (use with caution); Replace cables; Move unit away from power supplies or other noisy electronics. |
| VU meter not responding | No input signal; Unit not powered on; Meter malfunction. | Verify input signal presence; Check power; If problem persists, contact support. |
