Safety Precautions

Adhering to safety precautions is essential for accurate testing and user well-being. This meter is an aid to monitor the effectiveness of diabetes control, not intended to diagnose or screen for diabetes.

  • Test in a clean, dry environment (14°C-40°C, <95% R.H.).
  • Do not exercise before the test and maintain a calm emotional state, as excitement can increase adrenaline and blood glucose levels.
  • Ensure test strips are not contaminated, expired, or defective.
  • Close the vial immediately after taking out test strips, and use the strips within 1 minute. (Use strips within 3 months after opening).
  • Massage your finger for 10 seconds for enough samples before sampling.
  • Disinfect the sampling site with 75% alcohol pads (do not use iodine or disinfectant), and collect blood when alcohol has evaporated.
  • It is recommended to collect blood from the ventral side of the ring finger or middle finger, index finger, and little finger, which is not only less painful but also provides sufficient blood samples.
  • If there's no blood drop or the blood is not enough, please put your hand down for 5 seconds, or massage from your palm to the finger and avoid the sampling site.
  • Wipe off the first blood drop with a clean wet wipe and collect the second blood drop for testing.
  • Please collect enough blood samples at a time.
  • Do not press or move the test strips or blood glucose meter during testing.
  • Use new lancets for each blood sampling.
  • Do not test with used test strips.

Setup

1. Battery Installation

The AUVON DS-W meter typically comes with a battery. If not pre-installed, open the battery compartment on the back of the meter and insert the lithium metal battery, ensuring correct polarity. Close the compartment securely.

2. Setting Up the Lancing Device

  1. Twist and remove the cap from the lancing device.
  2. Insert a new lancet firmly into the device.
  3. Twist off the protective cap from the lancet.
  4. Snap the lancing device cap back on.
  5. Adjust the puncture depth by rotating the cap. Settings range from 1 to 5, with half steps, to match your skin type (e.g., 3.5 is a common starting point).
  6. Pull the sliding barrel until it clicks, indicating it is cocked and ready for use.

Operating Instructions

Follow these steps for accurate blood glucose testing:

  1. Prepare Your Hands: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water. Dry them completely with a clean towel.
  2. Insert Test Strip: Take one test strip from its vial and immediately close the vial cap. Insert the test strip into the meter with the blue side facing up. The meter will automatically turn on and display a blinking blood drop symbol, indicating it's ready for a blood sample.
  3. Prick Your Finger: Place the prepared lancing device firmly against the side of your fingertip and press the release button.
  4. Obtain Blood Sample: Gently squeeze your finger to form a round drop of blood. Wipe away the first drop with a clean tissue. Gently squeeze again to get a second drop of blood.
  5. Apply Blood to Strip: Touch the tip of the test strip to the blood drop. The blood will be drawn into the strip. Do not smear the blood. The meter will beep and begin counting down.
  6. Read Results: Your blood glucose result will appear on the display in 6 seconds.
  7. Dispose of Used Materials: Carefully remove the used test strip and lancet. Dispose of them properly in a sharps container or according to local regulations.

Understanding Your Results

Several factors can influence blood glucose readings. Understanding these can help interpret your results more accurately.

Factors Affecting Accuracy

  • Blood Glucose Meter (BGM) Designed Accuracy: AUVON DS-W glucometer adopts advanced biosensor and auto carbon printing tech to offer reliable glucose data.
  • Manufacturing and Quality Control: These methods affect accuracy stability.
  • Test Strip Problems: Throw out damaged or outdated test strips. Store strips in their sealed container, away from heat, moisture, and humidity. Close the bottle or box completely to avoid contamination.
  • Extreme Temperatures: Keep your glucose meter and test strips at room temperature.
  • Alcohol, Dirt, or Other Substances on Skin: Wash your hands with warm, soapy water. Dry them well with a clean towel thoroughly before pricking your skin. Wipe off the first drop of blood, and then collect a drop of blood on the test strip.
  • Monitor Problems: Fully insert the test strip into the monitor. Replace the monitor battery as needed.
  • Not Enough Blood Applied: Make sure you have an adequate amount of blood (0.7µL) for a reading. Don't add more blood to the test strip after the first drop is applied.
  • Testing Site Location: Blood samples from alternate sites aren't as accurate as fingertip samples when your blood sugar level is rising or falling quickly.
  • Amount of Red Blood Cells: If you are dehydrated or your red blood cell count is low (anemia), your test results may be less accurate.

Why Results May Differ

It is common to observe slight variations in blood glucose readings due to several factors:

  • Consecutive Tests: Each blood drop has a different amount of glucose due to blood circulation and sugar mixture. There is about a 5% difference when using the same blood sample, but both are accurate.
  • Home vs. Hospital Tests: All BGMs tests at home use whole blood to measure glucose, which contains red blood cells. Lab glucose tests in the hospital use the plasma portion of the blood, with red blood cells removed. Whole blood glucose test results are approximately 12-15% lower than lab plasma results.
  • Different Brands of Meters: The test results for the same blood sample may vary because each manufacturer's blood glucose meter setting is different. It is not recommended to compare test results from different brands of blood glucose meters.
