Setup

1. Power Connection

  • Connect a 9V DC power supply (minimum 300mA, center negative) to the 9VDC input jack on the rear panel.
  • Ensure the power supply meets the specified voltage and current requirements to prevent damage.

2. Audio Connections

  • Mono Setup: Connect your instrument to the MONO INPUT jack. Connect the MONO OUTPUT jack to your amplifier or next pedal in the signal chain.
  • Stereo Setup: Connect your instrument (or preceding stereo pedal) to both MONO and STEREO INPUT jacks. Connect the MONO and STEREO OUTPUT jacks to your stereo amplifier setup or other stereo effects.

3. Expression Pedal (Optional)

  • Connect an expression pedal to the EXP PEDAL input for real-time control over various delay parameters.

4. MIDI Connections (Optional)

  • Use the MIDI IN and THRU ports to integrate the Flashback 2 X4 into a MIDI-controlled setup for preset changes and parameter control.

5. Bypass Mode Selection

  • On the rear panel, locate the BYPASS switch.
  • True Bypass: Provides a completely unaltered signal when the pedal is disengaged.
  • Buffered Bypass: Maintains signal integrity over long cable runs and provides spillover for delay trails when disengaged.

6. Kill Dry Function

  • The KILL DRY switch on the rear panel removes the dry signal from the output. This is useful when using the pedal in a parallel effects loop or with a mixer that provides its own dry signal.

Operating Instructions

1. Controls Overview

  • TYPE Selector: Rotary switch to select delay algorithms (Loop, Reverse, LoFi, Ping Pong, Tape, Crystal, Dynamic, 2290, 2290 Mod, Analog).
  • SUBDIV Knob: Controls the rhythmic subdivision of the delay repeats.
  • DELAY Knob: Adjusts the delay time.
  • FEEDBACK Knob: Controls the number of delay repeats.
  • LEVEL Knob: Adjusts the overall output level of the delayed signal.
  • BANK 1/2 / STORE Switch: Toggles between two banks of presets (Bank 1 and Bank 2). Press and hold to store a preset.

2. Footswitch Functions

  • Footswitches A, B, C: Engage/disengage individual delay presets. These are also MASH footswitches.
  • MASH Functionality: Pressing and holding footswitches A, B, or C with varying pressure allows for expressive real-time control over specific delay parameters, depending on the selected TonePrint.
  • TAP Footswitch: Tap this footswitch two or more times to set the delay tempo.

3. Looper Operation

When the TYPE selector is set to "Loop":

  • REC (Footswitch A): Press to start recording a loop. The REC LED will illuminate. Press again to stop recording and start playback.
  • PLAY/PAUSE (Footswitch B): Press to play or pause the current loop.
  • ONCE (Footswitch C): Plays the loop once and then stops.
  • UNDO/REDDO (TAP Footswitch): Press to undo the last overdub. Press and hold to redo.

4. TonePrint Integration

The Flashback 2 X4 supports TC Electronic's TonePrint technology. This allows you to upload custom-tuned effects from your smartphone or computer.

  • Download the free TonePrint App for iOS/Android or the TonePrint Editor for Mac/PC.
  • Connect your pedal via USB to your computer or use the "Beam" function with your smartphone.
  • Load artist TonePrints or create your own custom delay sounds.
  • The pedal has 6 dedicated TonePrint slots for storing your favorite custom effects.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the pedal's exterior. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the pedal in a dry environment, away from extreme temperatures and humidity. Disconnect power when not in use for extended periods.
  • Cable Management: Ensure all cables are in good condition and properly connected to prevent signal loss or damage.

Troubleshooting

  • No Power:
    • Verify the power supply is correctly connected and meets the 9V DC, 300mA (center negative) specification.
    • Check the power outlet.
  • No Sound:
    • Ensure all audio cables are securely connected to the correct input/output jacks.
    • Check the volume/level settings on your instrument, amplifier, and the pedal itself.
    • Test with different cables to rule out faulty connections.
  • Unexpected Delay Behavior:
    • Check the selected delay TYPE and knob settings (SUBDIV, DELAY, FEEDBACK, LEVEL).
    • If using TonePrint, ensure the correct TonePrint is loaded and configured as desired.
    • For MASH functionality, ensure you are applying appropriate pressure and that the TonePrint supports the desired parameter control.
  • Looper Issues:
    • Ensure the TYPE selector is set to "Loop".
    • Follow the recording and playback steps carefully.
