3.3 Initializing and Formatting New Hard Drives

If you are using brand new hard drives, they may need to be initialized and formatted before your computer can recognize them. This process varies slightly depending on your operating system:

  • Windows: Open Disk Management (right-click "This PC" or "My Computer" > "Manage" > "Disk Management"). Locate the new drive(s), initialize them (MBR or GPT, GPT recommended for drives larger than 2TB), and then create and format a new simple volume.
  • macOS: Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility). Select the new drive from the sidebar, click "Erase," choose a format (e.g., APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled)), and a scheme (GUID Partition Map).
  • Linux: Use tools like GParted, fdisk, or parted to partition and format the drive.

Important: Always back up any important data before formatting a drive, as formatting will erase all existing data on the drive.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Data Transfer

Once the enclosure is connected and drives are recognized, you can access them like any other external storage device. Drag and drop files, or use your operating system's copy/paste functions to transfer data. The USB 3.1 Type-C interface supports transfer speeds up to 6Gbps, allowing for rapid data movement.

4.2 LED Indicators

The enclosure features LED indicators on the front panel to monitor the status of each hard drive:

  • Blue Light: Indicates the hard drive is reading or writing normally.
  • Red Light: Indicates a hard drive error or failure. The enclosure may also emit a warning sound (beep) in this event.

4.4 Safely Ejecting the Enclosure

Before disconnecting the enclosure or powering it off, always safely eject it from your computer to prevent data corruption:

  • Windows: Click the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon in the system tray, then select the enclosure.
  • macOS: Drag the drive icon(s) to the Trash, or right-click the drive icon(s) on the desktop and select "Eject."
  • Linux: Use the "umount" command or your desktop environment's eject option.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cooling System

The Yottamaster PS400C3 features an 80mm intelligent temperature control fan. This fan automatically adjusts its speed based on the internal temperature of the hard drives, ensuring optimal cooling while minimizing noise. The aluminum casing and cooling holes on the front and rear panels also contribute to efficient heat dissipation.

To ensure proper airflow, keep the enclosure's ventilation areas clear of obstructions. Avoid placing the enclosure in enclosed spaces or near heat sources.

5.2 Cleaning

To clean the exterior of the enclosure, use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners, aerosols, or solvents, as these may damage the finish or internal components. For dust accumulation in the ventilation holes, use compressed air sparingly.

6. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Yottamaster 4-Bay Hard Drive Enclosure. For more detailed troubleshooting, please refer to the official Troubleshooting Guide (PDF).

6.1 Common Questions and Solutions

  • Q: How do I know if one of the hard drives has failed?

A: If a drive is damaged or failed, its corresponding LED indicator on the front panel will turn red, and the enclosure may emit a warning sound (beep).

  • Q: How do I replace a hard drive?

    A:

    1. Safely eject the enclosure from your computer and power it off.
    2. Open the front door and pull out the tray containing the drive you wish to replace.
    3. Remove the old drive from the tray.
    4. If the new drive is brand new, format it on another device first.
    5. Insert the new drive into the tray, secure it with screws, and slide the tray back into its original position.
    6. Power on the enclosure.

  • Q: How do I add a new hard drive to the enclosure?

    A:

    1. Safely eject the enclosure from your computer and power it off.
    2. If the drive you want to add is brand new, format it on another device first.
    3. Insert the new drive into an empty tray, secure it, and slide the tray into an available slot. Do not change the order of existing drives if you are using software RAID.
    4. Power on the enclosure.

  • Q: Can I connect the device to the computer through a hub?

A: It is recommended to connect the device directly to the computer. Connecting through a hub may lead to unstable connections or reduced performance.

  • Q: What are the specifications of the fan?

A: The fan has a diameter of 80mm, operates at 12V, and uses a 2-PIN connector. There is no current limit specified for the fan itself.
