Setup and Installation

1. Drive Installation

The enclosure supports both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA HDDs/SSDs. Each bay can accommodate a single disk up to 16TB.

  1. Gently pull out the drive trays from the front of the enclosure.
  2. For 3.5-inch drives: Align the screw holes on the drive with the holes on the tray and secure with the provided screws.
  3. For 2.5-inch drives/SSDs: Place the drive on the tray and secure it using the appropriate screw holes.
  4. Slide the loaded drive tray back into the enclosure until it clicks into place. Ensure a firm connection.

Operating Instructions

RAID Mode Configuration

The Yottamaster enclosure supports various RAID modes. The RAID mode is set using DIP switches located on the back of the unit. After changing DIP switch settings, you must press the 'SET' button to apply the new configuration. Warning: Changing RAID modes will erase all data on the drives. Back up your data before changing RAID configurations.

Diagram showing DIP switch settings for various RAID modes: RAID 0, RAID 1/10, RAID 3, RAID 5, Span (Big), Normal/Clear

Figure 6: Flexible RAID Modes and DIP Switch Settings

Refer to the diagram above for specific DIP switch settings for each RAID mode:

  • RAID 0: Data striping for maximum performance, no redundancy.
  • RAID 1/10: Data mirroring and striping for performance and redundancy (requires 4 drives for RAID 10).
  • RAID 3: Data striping with dedicated parity for fault tolerance.
  • RAID 5: Data striping with distributed parity for performance and fault tolerance.
  • Span (Big): Combines all drives into one large volume without RAID functionality.
  • Normal/Clear: Each drive is recognized as an independent volume.
  • JBOD: Just a Bunch Of Disks, similar to Normal/Clear where each drive is independent.

After setting the DIP switches, press the small 'SET' button next to the switches using a pointed object (like a paperclip) to confirm the RAID configuration. The enclosure will then format the drives according to the selected RAID level.

Data Transfer

The enclosure supports USB 3.2 Gen 2, providing data transfer rates up to 10Gbps (Gigabits Per Second). The product specifications list a data transfer rate of 5 Gigabytes Per Second, which translates to 40 Gigabits Per Second. Actual transfer speeds may vary depending on the host system, drive speed, and RAID configuration.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Yottamaster enclosure.

Cooling System

The enclosure features an 80mm cooling fan and an all-aluminum body designed for efficient heat dissipation. Ensure that the front and rear cooling holes are not obstructed to maintain proper airflow.

Cleaning

Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the enclosure. Avoid using liquid cleaners or aerosols that could damage the internal components.

Firmware Updates

Periodically check the Yottamaster official website for any available firmware updates. Firmware updates can improve performance, add new features, or resolve known issues.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Yottamaster enclosure, please refer to the following common problems and solutions. For more detailed troubleshooting, you may refer to the official Troubleshooting Guide (PDF).

  • Enclosure not recognized by computer:
    • Ensure all cables (USB and power) are securely connected.
    • Try a different USB port on your computer.
    • Verify the enclosure is powered on.
    • Check if the drives are properly installed and seated in their bays.
    • For new drives, ensure they are initialized and formatted by your operating system.
  • Slow data transfer speeds:
    • Ensure you are using a USB 3.2 Gen 2 compatible port on your computer.
    • Check the quality of the USB cable. Use the provided cable or a high-quality alternative.
    • The speed of the installed drives can limit overall performance.
    • RAID configuration can impact speed (e.g., RAID 5 offers redundancy but may have lower write speeds than RAID 0).
  • Drives not appearing after RAID configuration change:
    • After changing RAID modes, you must press the 'SET' button on the back of the enclosure.
    • The drives will need to be re-initialized and formatted by your operating system after a RAID mode change. This process will erase all data.
  • Enclosure goes to sleep unexpectedly or causes system hangs:
    • Some operating systems or power management settings may conflict with the enclosure's sleep function. Check your computer's power settings.
    • Ensure the enclosure's firmware is up to date.
    • If issues persist, consider contacting Yottamaster support.
