4. Setup and Installation
4.1 Speaker Overview

Figure 4.1: Internal components of the 2-way passive speaker, highlighting the 1-inch tweeter and 4-inch woofer.
The Herdio HOS-401W speakers are passive, meaning they require an external amplifier for operation. Each speaker features a 1-inch PET dome tweeter and a 4-inch bass woofer for full-range sound reproduction.
4.2 Mounting the Speakers
The speakers come with versatile swivel brackets for flexible placement. These brackets allow for a 120-degree range of motion and the speaker face can rotate up to 90 degrees.
- Choose a suitable mounting location (wall, deck, patio, etc.). Ensure the surface is sturdy enough to support the speaker's weight.
- Attach the mounting bracket to the desired surface using the provided screws.
- Secure the speaker to the bracket using the included knobs, allowing for angle adjustment.

4.3 Wiring the Speakers
These passive speakers require connection to an external amplifier. Use the provided speaker wires to connect the speakers to your amplifier.
- Identify the positive (red) and negative (black) terminals on both the speaker and your amplifier.
- Connect the red wire to the red terminal and the black wire to the black terminal on both the speaker and the amplifier. Ensure a secure connection.
- For a stereo setup, connect one speaker to the left channel output of your amplifier and the other to the right channel output.
- For daisy-chaining multiple passive speakers (if supported by your amplifier and speaker model), refer to the amplifier's manual for specific instructions.

5. Operating Instructions
Once properly installed and connected to an amplifier, your Herdio HOS-401W speakers are ready for use.
- Power On: Turn on your external amplifier. The speakers will receive power and audio signals from the amplifier.
- Audio Source: Select your desired audio source (e.g., Bluetooth, AUX, USB) on your amplifier. If your amplifier has Bluetooth, pair your device with the amplifier.
- Volume Control: Adjust the volume using the controls on your amplifier or connected audio source.
- Sound Direction: Adjust the speaker's angle using the swivel brackets to optimize sound projection for your listening area.
6. Maintenance
To ensure longevity and optimal performance of your speakers:
- Cleaning: Wipe the speaker cabinets with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Weather Protection: While designed for indoor/outdoor use and featuring a weatherproof ABS cabinet, it is recommended to install them in covered areas (e.g., under a patio, covered deck) to extend their lifespan and protect them from direct, prolonged exposure to severe weather conditions.
- Connection Check: Periodically check all wiring connections to ensure they remain secure and free from corrosion.

7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound from speakers | No power to amplifier; incorrect wiring; amplifier input not selected; low volume. | Ensure amplifier is powered on. Check all speaker wire connections (positive to positive, negative to negative). Select correct input on amplifier. Increase volume on amplifier and audio source. |
| Distorted sound | Volume too high; poor audio source quality; damaged speaker wire. | Reduce volume. Test with a different audio source. Inspect speaker wires for damage and replace if necessary. |
| One speaker not working | Loose or incorrect wiring for that speaker; faulty speaker. | Check wiring for the non-working speaker. Swap speakers to determine if the issue is with the speaker or the wiring/amplifier channel. |
