3. Setup

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove all packaging materials and dispose of them responsibly. Ensure all components listed in Section 2 are present.
  2. Placement: Place the coffee machine on a dry, flat, stable, and heat-resistant surface. Ensure there is adequate space around the appliance for ventilation and to prevent contact with other objects. Do not place near hot surfaces or open flames.
  3. Initial Cleaning: Before first use, wash the glass carafe and reusable filter basket with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry. Wipe the exterior of the main unit with a damp cloth.
  4. First Use Cycle: To clean the internal components, fill the water tank to the MAX level with fresh water. Do not add coffee. Place the empty carafe on the heating plate. Press the power button to start a brewing cycle. Discard the water after the cycle is complete. Repeat this process once more.
  5. Power Connection: Plug the power cord into a grounded electrical outlet.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Brewing Coffee

  1. Fill Water Tank: Open the lid of the water tank and fill it with fresh, cold water up to the desired level, indicated by the markings on the side of the machine. Do not exceed the MAX fill line.
  2. Add Coffee Grounds: Place the reusable filter basket into its holder. Add the desired amount of ground coffee into the filter. A general guideline is one tablespoon of coffee per cup (5 oz). Adjust to personal preference.
  3. Position Carafe: Place the glass carafe with its lid securely on the heating plate. Ensure it is correctly positioned to activate the drip-stop mechanism.
  4. Start Brewing: Press the power button (usually indicated by a power symbol) on the control panel. The indicator light will illuminate, and the brewing process will begin.
  5. Serving: Once the brewing cycle is complete, the machine will automatically switch to a keep-warm function. Carefully remove the carafe to pour coffee. The heating plate will keep the coffee warm for a set period (typically 20-40 minutes, refer to specific model settings if adjustable).

4.2 Using the Timer Function

The Smeg DCF02PBEU features a programmable timer to start brewing at a preset time.

  1. Set Current Time: Refer to the control panel buttons (e.g., "Hour" and "Minute" buttons) to set the current time on the digital display.
  2. Prepare for Brewing: Follow steps 1 and 2 from "4.1 Brewing Coffee" (fill water, add coffee grounds).
  3. Set Program Time: Press the "Program" or "Timer" button. Use the "Hour" and "Minute" buttons to set the desired time for brewing to start. Press the "Program" or "Timer" button again to confirm.
  4. Activate Timer: Press the "Auto" or "Timer On" button. An indicator light will usually confirm that the timer is active. The machine will automatically start brewing at the programmed time.

5. Maintenance and Cleaning

Regular cleaning and maintenance ensure optimal performance and longevity of your coffee machine.

5.1 Daily Cleaning

5.2 Descaling

Mineral deposits (limescale) can build up over time, affecting performance. Descale your machine regularly, depending on water hardness and frequency of use (e.g., every 2-3 months).

  1. Prepare Descaling Solution: Mix a descaling solution according to the manufacturer's instructions (e.g., white vinegar and water, or a commercial descaling agent).
  2. Fill Water Tank: Pour the descaling solution into the water tank up to the MAX level.
  3. Run Cycle: Place the empty carafe on the heating plate. Start a brewing cycle without coffee. Allow half of the solution to brew through, then turn off the machine and let it sit for 15-20 minutes to allow the solution to work.
  4. Complete Cycle: Turn the machine back on to complete the brewing cycle, allowing the remaining solution to pass through.
  5. Rinse Cycles: After descaling, run at least two full cycles with fresh, clean water to rinse out any residual descaling solution.
