5. Setup

5.1 Powering the Device

The MixPre-6 II can be powered via AA batteries, L-mount batteries (with optional sled), or USB-C power.

5.2 Inserting an SD Card

The MixPre-6 II records audio to an SD card. Locate the SD card slot (typically on the side or bottom, refer to device diagrams) and insert a compatible SD, SDHC, or SDXC card with sufficient speed and capacity. Ensure the card is formatted by the MixPre-6 II before first use.

5.3 Connecting Microphones and Inputs

Connect your microphones or line-level sources to the XLR/TRS combo inputs (1-4) on the side panels. For auxiliary sources or timecode input, use the 3.5mm Aux/Mic In jack. For camera timecode, use the HDMI Cam TC In port.

5.4 Connecting to a Computer (USB Audio Interface)

Connect the MixPre-6 II to your computer using the supplied USB-C cable. The device will function as an 8-in, 4-out USB audio interface, allowing direct recording to your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Basic Recording

  1. Power On: Press and hold the power button until the device powers on.
  2. Select Input: Navigate the menu to select the desired input type (e.g., Mic, Line, Aux).
  3. Adjust Gain: Use the input gain knobs (1-4) to set appropriate recording levels. Monitor the on-screen meters to avoid clipping.
  4. Arm Tracks: Press the arm button for each track you wish to record.
  5. Start Recording: Press the REC button to begin recording. The button will illuminate.
  6. Stop Recording: Press the STOP button to end the recording.

6.2 Monitoring Audio

Connect headphones to the headphone jack. Use the dedicated headphone volume control to adjust monitoring levels. The MixPre-6 II allows for flexible routing of inputs to the headphone mix.

6.3 32-Bit Float Recording

The MixPre-6 II supports 32-bit float recording, which provides an extremely wide dynamic range. This feature significantly reduces the risk of clipping during recording, as levels can be adjusted in post-production without loss of quality. Ensure your DAW supports 32-bit float WAV files for full benefit.

6.4 Timecode Synchronization

The internal LTC timecode generator allows for precise synchronization with other devices. Timecode can be input via the Aux In/Stereo Out jack or via HDMI from a compatible camera. Refer to the on-screen menu for timecode settings and synchronization options.
