4. Setup and Assembly

Your BLACK+DECKER BDST1609 vacuum offers three versatile configurations:

4.1. Assembling the Stick Vacuum:

  1. Insert the extension handle into the main vacuum unit until it clicks securely into place.
  2. Attach the floor nozzle to the bottom of the main vacuum unit, ensuring it is firmly connected.

4.2. Converting to Handheld Vacuum:

  1. To detach the extension handle, press the release button located near the connection point and pull the handle upwards.
  2. To detach the floor nozzle, press the release button and pull the nozzle downwards.
  3. The main unit can now be used as a handheld vacuum.

4.3. Attaching the Crevice Tool:

For hard-to-reach areas, attach the crevice tool directly to the main vacuum unit (in handheld mode) or to the end of the extension handle.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Powering On/Off:

Plug the power cord into a suitable electrical outlet. Locate the power button on the main vacuum unit. Press the button to turn the vacuum ON. Press it again to turn the vacuum OFF.

5.2. Using as a Stick Vacuum:

With the extension handle and floor nozzle attached, use the vacuum for cleaning hard floors and low-pile carpets. The swivel steering allows for easy navigation around obstacles.

5.3. Using as a Handheld Vacuum:

In handheld mode, the vacuum is ideal for cleaning upholstery, car interiors, stairs, and other elevated or confined spaces. Attach the crevice tool for narrow gaps.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the lifespan of your vacuum cleaner.

6.1. Emptying the Dust Cup:

  1. Ensure the vacuum is unplugged from the power outlet.
  2. Press the dust cup release button to detach the dust cup from the main unit.
  3. Hold the dust cup over a trash receptacle and open the bottom flap to empty debris.
  4. Close the flap and reattach the dust cup to the main unit until it clicks.

6.2. Cleaning the Filter:

The BDST1609 features a washable cloth filter. For best results, clean the filter regularly.

  1. With the dust cup removed, carefully pull out the filter assembly.
  2. Tap the filter gently over a trash can to remove loose dust.
  3. Rinse the filter under cool, running water until the water runs clear.
  4. Allow the filter to air dry completely for at least 24 hours before reinserting it into the dust cup. Do not use the vacuum with a wet filter.
  5. Reinsert the dry filter into the dust cup and reattach the dust cup to the vacuum.

Note: The manufacturer suggests replacing the filter every 6 to 9 months for optimal performance, even if it is washable.

6.3. Cord Storage:

For tidy storage, wrap the power cord around the integrated hooks on the back of the extension handle.
