Flange Sizing Guide

Using the correct breast flange size is crucial for comfortable and effective milk expression. An improperly sized flange can lead to discomfort and reduced milk output.

Figure 6: Guide to measuring for correct flange size.

To determine your correct flange size, measure the diameter of your nipple (not the areola) at its base after a pumping session. Add 2-3mm to this measurement to find your ideal flange size. The Spectra S1 Plus includes both 24mm and 28mm flanges to help you find a comfortable fit.

Three diagrams showing breast flange fit: 'Too large' with areola pulled in, 'Too small' with nipple rubbing, and 'Great fit' with nipple centered and no areola pulled in.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Proper cleaning and maintenance are essential for hygiene and the longevity of your breast pump. All Spectra breast pump parts and accessories that come into contact with breast milk are BPA/DEHP free.

  • After Each Use: Disassemble all parts that come into contact with breast milk (flanges, valves, backflow protectors, bottles). Wash them immediately in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  • Sterilization: Sterilize parts regularly by boiling them for 5 minutes or using a steam sterilizer. Ensure all parts are completely dry before reassembly or storage.
  • Tubing: The tubing should not come into contact with breast milk. If moisture or milk is observed in the tubing, replace it immediately. Do not wash or sterilize tubing.
  • Pump Unit: Wipe the main pump unit with a clean, damp cloth. Do not immerse the pump unit in water or other liquids.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter any issues with your Spectra S1 Plus breast pump, please refer to the following common solutions:

  • No Suction or Weak Suction:
    • Check that all parts are correctly assembled and securely connected.
    • Inspect duckbill valves and backflow protectors for tears or damage; replace if necessary.
    • Ensure tubing is free of kinks and properly connected to both the pump and the backflow protector.
    • Verify that the unused tubing port is securely capped for single pumping.
  • Pump Not Turning On:
    • Ensure the pump is fully charged or connected to the power adapter.
    • Check the power adapter and outlet for proper function.
  • Discomfort During Pumping:
