Setup

1. Battery Installation and Charging

  1. Ensure the walkie talkie is powered off.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit. Slide it open.
  3. Insert the rechargeable lithium-ion battery into the compartment, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.
  5. For first-time use, fully charge the battery. Connect the Micro USB charging cable to the charging port on the battery or the walkie talkie unit, then connect the other end to a USB power source (e.g., wall adapter, computer, power bank).

2. Belt Clip Installation

  1. Align the belt clip with the designated slots on the back of the walkie talkie.
  2. Slide the clip downwards until it clicks securely into place.
  3. To remove, push the release tab and slide the clip upwards.

Operating Instructions

1. Power On/Off and Volume Adjustment

  • To turn on, rotate the Power/Volume knob clockwise until you hear a click and the display lights up.
  • To adjust volume, continue rotating the knob clockwise to increase or counter-clockwise to decrease.
  • To turn off, rotate the Power/Volume knob counter-clockwise until you hear a click and the display turns off.

2. Channel Selection

  • With the walkie talkie on, press the Menu/Lock (M/🔒) button once. The channel number on the display will flash.
  • Use the Up (+) or Down (-) buttons to select your desired channel (1-22).
  • Press the Menu/Lock (M/🔒) button again to confirm your selection, or wait a few seconds for it to automatically save.
  • Ensure all walkie talkies you wish to communicate with are set to the same channel.

3. Privacy Codes (CTCSS/DCS)

Privacy codes help reduce interference from other users on the same channel by filtering out transmissions that do not use the same code. The QNIGLO Q188 supports 99 privacy codes.

  • After selecting a channel, press the Menu/Lock (M/🔒) button twice. The privacy code number will flash.
  • Use the Up (+) or Down (-) buttons to select your desired privacy code (0-99). Code 0 means no privacy code is active.
  • Press the Menu/Lock (M/🔒) button again to confirm, or wait for automatic save.
  • For private communication, all walkie talkies must be on the same channel and the same privacy code.

4. Push-to-Talk (PTT)

  • To transmit, press and hold the PTT button located on the side of the walkie talkie. Speak clearly into the microphone.
  • Release the PTT button to stop transmitting and listen for a response.

5. VOX Function (Voice Operated Exchange)

The VOX function allows you to transmit without pressing the PTT button. Your voice automatically activates the transmission.

  • Press the Menu/Lock (M/🔒) button until the VOX icon appears on the display.
  • Use the Up (+) or Down (-) buttons to select the VOX sensitivity level (e.g., 1-3, with 3 being most sensitive). Select 'OFF' to disable VOX.
  • Press the Menu/Lock (M/🔒) button to confirm.

6. Monitor and Scan

  • Monitor: Briefly press the Monitor/Scan (MON/SCAN) button to temporarily disable squelch and listen to all activity on the current channel, including weak signals.
  • Scan: Press and hold the Monitor/Scan (MON/SCAN) button to activate channel scan. The walkie talkie will scan all available channels for activity. It will stop on an active channel and resume scanning after a few seconds of inactivity. Press any button (except PTT) to stop scanning.

7. Key Lock

  • To lock the keypad, press and hold the Menu/Lock (M/🔒) button until the lock icon (🔒) appears on the display. This prevents accidental changes to settings.
  • To unlock, press and hold the Menu/Lock (M/🔒) button again until the lock icon disappears.

8. Call Tone

  • Press the Call (🎵) button once to send an audible call tone to other walkie talkies on the same channel. This alerts others that you wish to communicate.
