Introduction
The Sony α7R IV combines a high-resolution 61MP back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor with impressive shooting speeds of up to 10 frames per second (fps) with full AF/AE tracking. It also supports beautiful 4K HDR video, offers a wide 15-stop dynamic range, and high sensitivity with area-specific noise reduction for exceptional image quality. This manual provides essential information for setting up, operating, and maintaining your camera.
Setup
1. Unboxing and Initial Inspection
Carefully unpack your Sony α7R IV camera and verify that all components listed below are present:

- Eyecup
- USB cable
2. Attaching the Lens
Align the white index mark on the lens with the white index mark on the camera body. Rotate the lens clockwise until it clicks into place. Ensure the lens is securely attached before use.

3. Inserting the Battery and Memory Card
Open the battery/memory card cover located at the bottom of the camera. Insert the NP-FZ100 battery with the correct orientation until it locks. The camera supports dual memory card slots (UHS-II compatible) for flexible storage and backup. Insert your memory cards into the designated slots until they click.

Operating the Camera
1. Power On/Off
To power on the camera, slide the ON/OFF switch located on the top plate. The camera will power on and the electronic viewfinder (EVF) or rear LCD screen will activate.

2. Basic Shooting Modes
Rotate the mode dial on the top of the camera to select your desired shooting mode:
- P (Program Auto): The camera automatically sets aperture and shutter speed.
- A (Aperture Priority): You set the aperture, and the camera sets the shutter speed.
- S (Shutter Priority): You set the shutter speed, and the camera sets the aperture.
- M (Manual Exposure): You set both aperture and shutter speed.
- AUTO: Fully automatic mode for simple point-and-shoot operation.
3. Advanced Autofocus System
The α7R IV features a Fast Hybrid Autofocus system with 567 phase-detection AF points and 425 contrast-detection AF points, covering a wide area of the sensor. Key AF features include:
- Real-time Tracking: Utilizes AI-based subject recognition to maintain focus on moving subjects.
- Real-time Eye AF: Detects and tracks human and animal eyes for precise focus in portraits and wildlife photography.
4. Video Recording
The camera supports 4K HDR video recording with full pixel readout without binning in Super 35mm mode. It also includes S-Log and HLG recording features for professional color grading workflows.

5. Pixel Shift Multi Shooting
For extremely high-resolution images of static subjects, the Pixel Shift Multi Shooting mode captures multiple pixel-shifted frames (up to 16) and composites them into a single image with approximately 240.8MP (963.2MP from original data). This feature requires Sony's Imaging Edge software for processing.
Maintenance
1. Cleaning the Camera
- Camera Body: Wipe the camera body gently with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use organic solvents.
- Lens and Sensor: Use a blower brush to remove dust. For stubborn dust, use a lens cleaning solution and a micro-fiber cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces. Avoid touching the sensor directly.
- LCD Screen: Gently wipe with a soft cloth to remove fingerprints or smudges.
2. Storage
When not in use, store the camera in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Remove the battery if the camera will not be used for an extended period.
Troubleshooting
1. Camera Does Not Power On
- Ensure the battery is fully charged and correctly inserted.
- Check if the battery terminals are clean.
- Try using a different, fully charged battery.
2. Images Are Blurry
- Verify that the lens is clean and free from smudges.
- Check your focus mode and ensure the subject is in focus.
- Increase shutter speed to prevent motion blur, especially in low light or with moving subjects.
- Ensure image stabilization (SteadyShot) is enabled if shooting handheld.
3. Memory Card Error
- Ensure the memory card is correctly inserted.
- Try formatting the memory card (this will erase all data).
- Use a different, compatible memory card.
