Setup

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the machine from its packaging. Retain packaging for future transport or storage.
  2. Placement: Place the machine on a stable, level surface, away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Ensure adequate ventilation around the machine.
  3. Water Tank: Remove the water tank, rinse it, and fill it with fresh tap water up to the MAX indication. Insert the AquaClean filter if desired, following its specific instructions. Reinsert the water tank into the machine.
  4. Bean Hopper: Open the lid of the bean hopper and fill it with fresh coffee beans. Close the lid securely to maintain aroma.
  5. Power Connection: Plug the power cord into a grounded wall socket.
  6. Initial Rinse Cycle: The machine will prompt you to perform an initial rinse cycle. Follow the on-screen instructions. This primes the system and ensures optimal performance.
  7. Water Hardness Test: Use the provided water hardness test strip to determine your water hardness. Adjust the machine's setting accordingly (refer to the full user manual for detailed steps on adjusting water hardness).

Operating

Making Coffee (Espresso or Coffee)

  1. Turn On: Press the power button to turn on the machine. It will perform an automatic rinse cycle.
  2. Select Drink: On the intuitive touch display, select your desired coffee type: Espresso or Coffee.
  3. Adjust Settings (Optional):
    • Strength: Tap the coffee bean icon to adjust coffee strength.
    • Volume: Tap the cup icon to adjust the volume of your drink.
    • Grind Size: The ceramic grinder has 12 settings. Adjust the grind size dial inside the bean hopper. Note: Adjust grind size only when the grinder is operating, and only one click at a time.
  4. Brew: Place a cup under the coffee spout and press the start/stop button. The machine will begin brewing.

Using the Classic Milk Frother

  1. Prepare Milk: Fill a milk pitcher with fresh, cold milk.
  2. Position Frother: Position the classic milk frother's steam wand into the milk, just below the surface.
  3. Activate Steam: Select the Steam function on the touch display.
  4. Froth Milk: Move the pitcher slowly up and down to create rich, silky milk froth.
  5. Clean Frother: After frothing, immediately clean the steam wand with a damp cloth to prevent milk residue from drying. Run a short burst of steam to clear any internal blockages.

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Philips 2200 Series Espresso Machine.

Daily Cleaning

  • Drip Tray & Coffee Grounds Container: Empty and rinse daily.
  • Classic Milk Frother: Clean the steam wand immediately after each use.

Weekly Cleaning

  • Water Tank: Rinse the water tank and its lid.

Monthly/As Needed Maintenance

  • Lubricating the Brew Group: Lubricate the brew group's moving parts with the provided grease tube every two months or as needed, especially if it becomes stiff.
  • Coffee Oil Remover: Use Philips coffee oil remover tablets (CA6704/10) to clean the brew group and coffee spout, preventing blockages and removing grease.
  • Descaling: The machine will notify you when descaling is required. Use Philips descaler (CA6700/90) and follow the on-screen instructions. The AquaClean filter significantly extends the time between descaling cycles, up to 5,000 cups.
