5. Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and safety. It is highly recommended that installation be performed by a qualified car audio professional.
5.1 Mounting the Amplifier
Choose a mounting location that provides adequate ventilation and is protected from moisture. Secure the amplifier firmly to a solid surface using appropriate hardware.

5.2 Wiring Connections
Ensure all connections are secure and properly insulated to prevent short circuits.
- Power (+12V): Connect a heavy-gauge power cable directly from the vehicle's positive battery terminal to the +12V terminal on the amplifier. Install an appropriate fuse or circuit breaker within 18 inches of the battery.
- Ground (GND): Connect a heavy-gauge ground cable from the GND terminal on the amplifier to a clean, unpainted metal surface on the vehicle's chassis. Ensure a solid, low-resistance connection.
- Remote (REM): Connect a remote turn-on wire from your head unit's remote output to the REM terminal on the amplifier. This wire signals the amplifier to turn on and off with your head unit.
- Speaker Output: Connect your subwoofer(s) to the SPEAKER terminals. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -) and that the total impedance matches the amplifier's stable operating range (1 Ohm stable).
- Line Input (RCA): Connect RCA cables from your head unit's subwoofer output to the LINE-INPUT (L/R) jacks on the amplifier.

6. Operating Instructions
Once installed, adjust the amplifier settings for optimal audio performance.
- Level (Gain) Control: Adjust this to match the output voltage of your head unit. Start with the control at minimum and slowly increase until desired volume is achieved without distortion.
- Phase (0°/180°): Adjust this switch to match the phase of your subwoofer with the rest of your audio system for optimal bass response.
- Bass Boost (0dB-12dB): Use this control to enhance bass frequencies. Use sparingly to avoid distortion and speaker damage.
- Subsonic Filter (10Hz-40Hz): This filter removes ultra-low frequencies that are inaudible and can cause damage to subwoofers. Set it slightly below the tuning frequency of your subwoofer enclosure.
- Low Pass Filter (LPF) (40Hz-300Hz): This filter allows only frequencies below the set point to pass through to the subwoofer. Adjust to blend smoothly with your main speakers.
- Bass Remote (HFR-31): Connect the included bass remote to the dedicated port (HF-U-01) on the amplifier. This allows for convenient real-time adjustment of the bass level from the driver's seat.

7. Maintenance
Your Hifonics amplifier requires minimal maintenance to ensure long-lasting performance.
- Cleaning: Periodically wipe the amplifier's exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Ventilation: Ensure that the heat sink fins are free from dust and debris to maintain proper cooling.
- Connections: Occasionally check all power, ground, remote, and speaker connections to ensure they remain tight and free from corrosion.
8. Troubleshooting
If you experience issues with your amplifier, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No Power / No Indicator Lights | Blown fuse, loose power/ground connection, no remote signal. | Check battery fuse, verify +12V, GND, and REM connections. Ensure head unit is on. |
| No Sound Output | RCA cables disconnected, speaker wires loose/shorted, gain too low, head unit volume down. | Check RCA and speaker connections. Adjust gain. Increase head unit volume. |
| Distorted Sound | Gain set too high, speaker impedance too low, damaged speakers, poor ground. | Reduce gain. Check speaker impedance. Inspect speakers. Verify ground connection. |
| Amplifier Goes into Protection Mode (Red PRT light on) | Overheating, speaker short circuit, impedance too low, DC offset. | Allow amplifier to cool. Check speaker wiring for shorts. Verify speaker impedance. Consult professional if issue persists. |
