Orno CR-232

ORNO CR-232 Twilight Switch Instruction Manual

Model: CR-232 | Brand: Orno

1. Introduction

The ORNO CR-232 Twilight Switch is an automatic lighting control device designed for outdoor use. It detects ambient light levels and switches connected electrical loads on or off, promoting energy efficiency. This device is ideal for controlling outdoor lighting in gardens, terraces, balconies, or other damp environments.

Key Features:

  • IP65 Protection Class: Suitable for outdoor areas, resistant to water and dust.
  • Adjustable LUX Level: Easily set the desired light intensity for activation (2-100 lux).
  • Power Supply: 230V/50Hz.
  • Load Capacity: Compatible with LED lamps and lighting fixtures from 10W to 2300W.
  • Mounting: Surface mount for both the main unit and the external sensor.

2. Safety Information

Please read these instructions carefully before installation and use. Improper installation or use can lead to electric shock, fire, or damage to the device. All electrical work should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with local wiring regulations.

  • Disconnect power at the main circuit breaker before installation or maintenance.
  • Ensure the device is installed in a location protected from direct mechanical impact.
  • Do not exceed the maximum load capacity of 2300W.
  • Ensure all connections are secure and properly insulated.

3. Product Overview

The ORNO CR-232 consists of a main control unit and an external light sensor (probe). The main unit houses the wiring terminals and the LUX adjustment knob, while the external sensor detects ambient light.

4. Setup and Installation

The ORNO CR-232 is designed for surface mounting. Both the main unit and the external sensor must be securely mounted and wired together.

4.1 Mounting the Main Unit and Sensor

  1. Choose a suitable location for the main unit, ensuring it is accessible for wiring and adjustments.
  2. Mount the external sensor in a location where it can accurately detect ambient light, away from direct artificial light sources (e.g., the light it controls) and obstructions. The sensor cable can be up to 15 meters long.
  3. Secure both units to a flat surface using appropriate screws.

4.2 Wiring Instructions

Refer to the wiring diagram on the device (Figure 1) and follow these steps:

  1. Ensure power is OFF at the main circuit breaker.
  2. Connect the Neutral (N) wire from the power supply to the terminal marked 'N' on the main unit.
  3. Connect the Live (L) wire from the power supply to the terminal marked 'IN~' on the main unit.
  4. Connect the Live (L) wire for the controlled load (e.g., lamp) to the terminal marked 'L' (output) on the main unit. The neutral wire for the load should be connected directly to the main neutral supply.
  5. Connect the external sensor cable to the dedicated terminals on the main unit. The external sensor uses a PG7 cable gland for a hermetic seal.
  6. Double-check all connections for security and proper insulation.
  7. Restore power to the circuit.

5. Operating Instructions

The ORNO CR-232 operates by detecting ambient light through its external sensor. When the light intensity falls below the set LUX level, the connected load will switch ON. When the light intensity rises above the set LUX level, the load will switch OFF.

5.1 Adjusting LUX Sensitivity

The device features an adjustable potentiometer (knob) on the main unit to set the desired light intensity (LUX) at which the switch will activate.

  1. Locate the 'LUX' adjustment knob on the main unit (refer to Figure 1).
  2. Turn the knob clockwise to increase the LUX sensitivity (the light will switch ON when it is brighter).
  3. Turn the knob counter-clockwise to decrease the LUX sensitivity (the light will switch ON when it is darker).
  4. Test the setting by simulating dusk/dawn conditions or waiting for natural light changes. Adjust as needed to achieve the desired ON/OFF threshold.

6. Maintenance

The ORNO CR-232 is designed for low maintenance. However, regular checks can ensure optimal performance and longevity.

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the external sensor with a soft, damp cloth to remove dirt, dust, or debris that might obstruct light detection. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
  • Inspection: Annually inspect the wiring connections for any signs of wear, corrosion, or loosening. Ensure the cable gland on the sensor is still securely sealed.
  • Environmental Factors: Ensure the sensor remains unobstructed by growing plants, new structures, or other objects that could cast shadows or block light.

7. Troubleshooting

If the twilight switch is not functioning as expected, consider the following common issues and solutions:

  • Light does not switch ON at dusk:
    • Check power supply to the unit.
    • Verify wiring connections are correct and secure.
    • Adjust the LUX sensitivity knob counter-clockwise (towards darker setting).
    • Ensure the external sensor is not obstructed or covered.
    • Test the connected load (e.g., lamp) independently to ensure it is functional.
  • Light does not switch OFF at dawn:
    • Adjust the LUX sensitivity knob clockwise (towards brighter setting).
    • Ensure the external sensor is receiving sufficient ambient light and is not in a perpetually shaded area.
    • Check for nearby artificial light sources (e.g., streetlights) that might be illuminating the sensor, preventing it from detecting true dawn.
  • Light switches ON/OFF erratically:
    • Ensure the sensor is not exposed to flickering lights or intermittent shadows.
    • Check for loose wiring connections.
    • Clean the sensor surface.

If problems persist after checking these points, contact a qualified electrician or the product supplier for assistance.
