2. Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent injury and damage to the instrument:

  • Read and understand all instructions before using the device.
  • Do not use the device if it appears damaged or is operating abnormally.
  • Always disconnect power to circuits before connecting the transmitter to de-energized wires.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with electrical systems.
  • Ensure proper battery installation and replacement as specified.
  • Keep the device away from water and extreme temperatures.

3. Setup

3.1 Battery Installation

The 508S-G requires two 9V batteries for operation (one for the Transmitter and one for the Receiver). To install or replace batteries:

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of both the 508ST Transmitter and 508SR Receiver.
  2. Open the compartment cover.
  3. Insert a fresh 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Close the compartment cover securely.
  5. Use the 'BATTERY TEST' function on the Transmitter to verify battery strength.

3.2 Connecting the Transmitter (508ST)

The 508ST Transmitter injects a signal into the wire to be traced. Proper connection is crucial for accurate results.

For De-energized Wires:

  1. Ensure the circuit is completely de-energized before making any connections.
  2. Connect the red alligator clip lead from the transmitter to the wire you wish to trace.
  3. Connect the black alligator clip lead to a known good ground source (e.g., a ground rod, cold water pipe, or neutral wire).
  4. Set the transmitter switch to the 'HIGH' position.

For Energized Wires (up to 120 VAC):

  1. Use the AC adapter plug provided.
  2. Plug the AC adapter into a live 120 VAC outlet that is connected to the wire you want to trace.
  3. Set the transmitter switch to the 'HIGH' position.

4. Operation

4.1 Using the Receiver (508SR)

The 508SR Receiver detects the signal emitted by the transmitter. It features a thumbwheel switch for turning the unit on and adjusting the receiver gain (sensitivity).

  1. Turn on the 508SR Receiver using the thumbwheel switch.
  2. Adjust the gain to a suitable level. Start with a lower setting and increase as needed.
  3. Hold the receiver with the tracking antenna pointed towards the suspected path of the wire.
  4. Listen for the audible tone and observe the visual indicator (if present) to identify the signal strength. The strongest signal indicates the wire's location.

4.2 Tracing Wires Underground

When tracing wires underground, walk slowly along the suspected path, sweeping the receiver's antenna from side to side. The signal will be strongest directly over the wire.

The 508ST Transmitter is placed near the ground, and the 508SR Receiver is held by hand, indicating the process of tracing underground cables. The image highlights the tool's capability to trace wires up to 3 feet deep and 1000 feet long.

4.3 Locating Wires in Walls, Floors, and Ceilings

For indoor applications, move the receiver along the surface where the wire is suspected. The signal will peak when the antenna is directly over the wire. The 508S-G can also help locate specific circuit breakers by connecting the transmitter to the circuit and then using the receiver at the breaker panel.

The text overlay emphasizes the product's ability to locate energized or non-energized wires in walls, floors, and drop ceilings, illustrating its versatility for indoor applications.

4.4 Determining Wire Depth

The 508S-G can help estimate the approximate depth of a buried wire. Once the wire's path is identified, hold the receiver at a 45-degree angle to the ground, directly over the wire. The distance from the ground to the receiver when the signal is strongest at this angle can provide an indication of the wire's depth.

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the units with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the 508S-G in its rugged carrying case in a cool, dry place when not in use.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace batteries promptly when the low battery indicator appears or when performance degrades. Always use fresh 9V alkaline batteries.
  • Automatic Shut-off: The receiver is equipped with an automatic shut-off feature to conserve battery life.

6. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No signal or weak signalLow batteries; Improper transmitter connection; Wire too deep or too long; High interference.Replace batteries; Verify transmitter connections (ensure good ground); Adjust receiver gain; Reduce interference sources.
Inaccurate tracingHigh interference from other cables/metal; Receiver gain too high; Incorrect tracing technique.Lower receiver gain; Move away from other metallic objects; Sweep antenna slowly and methodically; Ensure proper grounding of transmitter.
Transmitter not powering onDead battery; Faulty connection.Replace battery; Check all connections.
