Raspberry Pi RAS-4-4G

Raspberry Pi 4 Model B User Manual

Model: RAS-4-4G | Brand: Raspberry Pi

Introduction

The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is the latest product in the popular Raspberry Pi range of computers. It offers ground-breaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, memory, and connectivity compared to the prior-generation Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, while retaining backwards compatibility and similar power consumption. For the end user, Raspberry Pi 4 Model B provides desktop performance comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.

This manual provides essential information for setting up, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting your Raspberry Pi 4 Model B.

Setup Guide

1. What's in the Box

The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B package typically includes the board only. Additional components are required for operation.

  • Raspberry Pi 4 Model B board

2. Required Components (Not Included)

  • Power Supply: A 5.1V, 3A USB Type-C power supply is required.
  • Micro SD Card: A high-quality micro SD card (minimum 8GB recommended) for the operating system and data storage.
  • Display Cable: Micro HDMI to HDMI cable(s) for connecting to a monitor (supports up to two 4K displays).
  • Peripherals: USB keyboard and mouse.
  • Optional: Ethernet cable for wired network, PoE HAT for Power over Ethernet.

3. Initial Hardware Connection

  1. Prepare Micro SD Card: Download and flash an operating system (e.g., Raspberry Pi OS) onto the micro SD card using a tool like Raspberry Pi Imager.
  2. Insert Micro SD Card: Gently insert the prepared micro SD card into the card slot on the underside of the Raspberry Pi board.
  3. Connect Display: Connect your monitor(s) to the micro HDMI ports using appropriate cables. The Raspberry Pi 4 has two micro HDMI ports.
  4. Connect Peripherals: Plug in your USB keyboard and mouse into the available USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 ports.
  5. Connect Network (Optional): If using a wired connection, plug an Ethernet cable into the Gigabit Ethernet port.
  6. Connect Power: Finally, connect the 5.1V, 3A USB Type-C power supply to the USB-C power port. The Raspberry Pi will power on automatically.

Operating Instructions

1. First Boot and OS Configuration

Upon first boot, the Raspberry Pi OS will guide you through an initial setup wizard. This includes setting your country, language, timezone, creating a user password, connecting to Wi-Fi, and updating software.

2. Connectivity

  • Wi-Fi: The Raspberry Pi 4 supports dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Connect via the desktop environment's network manager.
  • Bluetooth: Bluetooth 5.0 is integrated. Pair devices through the Bluetooth manager in the desktop environment.
  • Ethernet: Gigabit Ethernet provides a stable wired network connection.
  • USB Ports: Utilize the two USB 3.0 ports (blue) for high-speed peripherals and two USB 2.0 ports (black) for standard devices like keyboards and mice.

3. Video Output

The Raspberry Pi 4 features two micro HDMI ports, allowing for dual-monitor setups. It supports resolutions up to 4Kp60. Ensure your monitors and cables support the desired resolution.

4. GPIO Pins

The 40-pin GPIO (General Purpose Input/Output) header allows for interfacing with a wide range of electronic components, sensors, and custom hardware. Refer to the official Raspberry Pi documentation for detailed pinout diagrams and programming guides.

Maintenance

1. Cooling

The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B can generate heat under heavy load. For sustained performance, especially in enclosed cases or high ambient temperatures, consider using a heatsink or an active cooling solution (fan).

2. Software Updates

Regularly update your operating system and installed software to ensure optimal performance, security, and access to the latest features. This can typically be done via the terminal using commands like sudo apt update and sudo apt full-upgrade.

3. Cleaning

Keep the board free from dust and debris. Use compressed air or a soft brush to gently clean the components. Ensure the device is powered off and disconnected from all power sources before cleaning.

Troubleshooting

  • No Power/Boot: Ensure you are using a 5.1V, 3A USB-C power supply. Check that the micro SD card is properly inserted and has a valid operating system image.
  • No Display Output: Verify that the micro HDMI cables are securely connected to both the Raspberry Pi and the monitor. Try different micro HDMI ports or cables. Ensure your monitor is set to the correct input source.
  • Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Issues: Check network settings in the OS. Ensure the Raspberry Pi is within range of your Wi-Fi router. For Bluetooth, ensure the device you are trying to pair is in pairing mode.
  • Overheating: If the board feels excessively hot or performance degrades, consider adding a heatsink or fan. Ensure adequate airflow around the board, especially if it's in an enclosure.
  • SD Card Corruption: Powering off the Raspberry Pi without proper shutdown can corrupt the SD card. Always use the shutdown option in the OS before disconnecting power. If corruption occurs, you may need to re-flash the OS.
