1. Introduction
The APC Back-UPS 650 is an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) designed to provide power protection for your electronic equipment. It safeguards against power surges, spikes, and sags, and provides temporary battery power during power outages. This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient use of your Back-UPS 650 system.

3. Product Features and Components

Figure 1: APC Back-UPS 650 Front View
An image showing the top-front view of the APC Back-UPS 650. It features multiple outlets for battery backup and surge protection, as well as surge protection only. The power button and indicator lights are visible on the top right. The APC logo and model number are clearly displayed.
The APC Back-UPS 650 features several key components for power management:
- Battery Backup + Surge Protection Outlets: These outlets provide both battery power during outages and protection against surges and spikes. Critical devices like computers and monitors should be connected here.
- Surge Protection Only Outlets: These outlets provide protection against surges and spikes but do not supply battery power during an outage. Connect non-critical devices such as printers or scanners here.
- Power On/Off Button: Used to turn the UPS unit on or off.
- Power On Indicator: A green LED light indicating that the UPS is powered on and operating normally.
- Replace Battery Indicator: An amber LED light that illuminates when the UPS battery needs to be replaced.
- APC Logo and Model Number: Clearly visible on the unit, indicating the brand and model (Back-UPS 650).
4. Setup
- Unpack the UPS: Carefully remove the UPS from its packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage.
- Position the UPS: Place the UPS in a location that is cool, dry, and away from direct sunlight. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit.
- Connect to Utility Power: Plug the UPS power cord directly into a grounded 3-prong wall outlet. Avoid using extension cords or surge protectors.
- Initial Battery Charge: Allow the UPS to charge for at least 8-10 hours before connecting any equipment. This ensures maximum runtime capacity. The unit will charge whether it is turned on or off.
- Connect Equipment:
- Plug critical equipment (e.g., computer, monitor, external hard drive) into the Battery Backup + Surge Protection outlets.
- Plug non-critical equipment (e.g., printer, scanner, desk lamp) into the Surge Protection Only outlets.
5. Operation
- Turning On the UPS: After the initial charge, press the Power On/Off button. The green Power On indicator will illuminate, and the UPS will emit a short beep, indicating it is operational.
- Turning Off the UPS: Press and hold the Power On/Off button until the unit beeps and the green Power On indicator turns off.
- Power Outage: During a power outage, the UPS will automatically switch to battery power. It will emit an audible alarm (beeping) to indicate it is running on battery. The green Power On indicator will flash.
- Low Battery Warning: If the battery level becomes critically low, the UPS will emit a rapid beeping sound. At this point, save your work and shut down connected equipment gracefully.
6. Maintenance
- Battery Replacement: The Back-UPS 650 uses a Sealed Lead Acid battery. The "Replace Battery" indicator will illuminate when the battery needs replacement, typically every 3-5 years depending on usage and environmental conditions. Refer to the APC website or contact support for compatible replacement batteries and instructions.
- Cleaning: Periodically clean the exterior of the UPS with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents. Ensure ventilation openings are free from dust and debris.
- Battery Test: It is recommended to perform a battery self-test periodically (e.g., once a month) to ensure the battery is functioning correctly. Consult the APC website or product documentation for specific instructions on initiating a self-test for your model.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| UPS does not turn on. | Not connected to utility power; battery discharged; internal fault. | Ensure the power cord is securely plugged into a live wall outlet. Allow the unit to charge for several hours. If the problem persists, contact APC support. |
| UPS beeps continuously or frequently. | Running on battery power; overloaded; battery fault. | Check if there's a power outage. Reduce the load by unplugging non-essential equipment. If the "Replace Battery" indicator is on, replace the battery. |
| "Replace Battery" indicator is lit. | Battery has reached end of life or is faulty. | Replace the UPS battery. Refer to the Maintenance section for details. |
| Connected equipment loses power during an outage. | Equipment plugged into surge-only outlets; UPS overloaded; battery discharged. | Ensure critical equipment is plugged into Battery Backup outlets. Reduce load. Allow battery to fully charge. |
