1. Introduction

The Klein Tools ET140 is a pinless moisture meter designed for non-destructive detection of relative moisture content in various building materials. This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your ET140 moisture meter.

The ET140 detects moisture up to 3/4-inch (19 mm) below the surface, making it suitable for drywall, masonry, hardwood, and softwood. Its clear display and intuitive controls ensure ease of use for accurate moisture assessment.

3. Setup

3.1 Battery Installation

The Klein Tools ET140 requires one 9V battery (included). To install or replace the battery:

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the meter.
  2. Open the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert a new 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

3.2 Powering On/Off

Press the Power button (blue button in the center) to turn the meter ON or OFF. The meter will automatically power off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery life.

  • Reverse-Contrast Display: Provides clear digital readings of moisture percentage, even in low-light conditions.
  • LED Bar Graph: Offers a visual reference of relative moisture content, ranging from 'DRY' (green) to 'WET' (red).
  • MODE Button: Toggles between different material types (Drywall, Masonry, Hardwood, Softwood).
  • HOLD Button: Freezes the current measurement on the display for easier reading.

4.2 Selecting Material Type

Before taking a measurement, press the MODE button to select the appropriate material type for the surface you are testing. The selected material will be indicated on the display.

  • Drywall: For gypsum board and similar materials.
  • Masonry: For concrete, brick, and stone.
  • Hardwood: For dense wood types.
  • Softwood: For less dense wood types.

4.3 Taking a Measurement

To measure moisture content:

  1. Ensure the meter is ON and the correct material type is selected.
  2. Place the back of the meter flat against the surface you wish to test. Ensure full contact for accurate readings.
  3. The digital display will show the relative moisture percentage, and the LED bar graph will provide a visual indication of moisture levels (Dry to Wet).
  4. To hold a reading, press the HOLD button. Press it again to release.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

Wipe the meter with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the meter is dry before storage.

5.2 Battery Replacement

Refer to Section 3.1 for battery replacement instructions. Replace the 9V battery when the low battery indicator appears on the display.

5.3 Storage

When not in use, store the meter in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, remove the battery to prevent leakage.

  • Meter does not power on: Check if the 9V battery is correctly installed and has sufficient charge. Replace the battery if necessary.
  • Inconsistent or inaccurate readings: Ensure the meter is placed flat against the surface with full contact. Verify that the correct material type is selected using the MODE button.
  • Low battery indicator: Replace the 9V battery promptly to ensure continued accurate operation.
