1. Introduction

The PCE Instruments PCE-LT 15 is a versatile combination device functioning as both a digital multimeter (DMM) and a LAN cable tester. It is designed for accurate measurement of AC/DC voltage and resistance, as well as for performing continuity and diode tests. Additionally, it features a dedicated function for testing LAN cables and patch fields, providing pin-out indication for network cable integrity.

3. Product Overview

The PCE-LT 15 integrates a digital multimeter and a LAN cable tester into a compact, handheld unit. It features a clear digital display for multimeter functions and an LED bargraph for LAN testing.

3.1. Components

  • Main Unit: Contains the digital multimeter, LAN cable tester controls, and display.
  • Remote Unit: Used for LAN cable testing, connects to the far end of the cable.
  • Test Leads: Red and black leads for multimeter measurements.
  • Digital Display: Shows measurement values for multimeter functions.
  • LED Pin-Out Indicator: Displays the status of each wire in a LAN cable.
  • Rotary Function Switch: Selects measurement modes (AC/DC Voltage, Resistance, Continuity, OFF).
  • Control Buttons: SEL (Select), RNG (Range), HOLD (Data Hold), ON/OFF (LAN Tester).

4. Setup

4.1. Battery Installation

The PCE-LT 15 requires two types of batteries:

  • Multimeter Function: Requires 2 x 1.5V AAA batteries. Open the battery compartment on the main unit, insert batteries with correct polarity, and secure the cover.
  • LAN Tester Function: Requires 1 x 9V 6F22 battery. Open the battery compartment on the main unit, insert the battery with correct polarity, and secure the cover.

Ensure batteries are correctly installed before use. Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display.

4.2. Connecting Test Leads

For multimeter functions, insert the red test lead into the 'VΩmA' input jack and the black test lead into the 'COM' (common) input jack. Ensure connections are secure.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Powering On/Off

The multimeter function powers on when the rotary switch is moved from the 'OFF' position to any measurement function. To power off the multimeter, turn the rotary switch to 'OFF'. The LAN tester has a separate 'ON/OFF' button.

5.2. AC/DC Voltage Measurement

  1. Turn the rotary switch to the 'V~' (AC Voltage) or 'V=' (DC Voltage) position. The device is auto-ranging.
  2. Connect the test leads in parallel to the circuit or component where voltage is to be measured.
  3. Read the voltage value displayed on the LCD.

5.3. Resistance Measurement

  1. Ensure the circuit or component is de-energized before measurement.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the 'Ω' (Resistance) position.
  3. Connect the test leads across the component to be measured.
  4. Read the resistance value displayed on the LCD.

5.4. Continuity Test

  1. Ensure the circuit or component is de-energized.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the 'Ω' position, then press the 'SEL' button to cycle to the continuity mode (indicated by a buzzer icon).
  3. Connect the test leads across the circuit or component.
  4. If the measured resistance is less than approximately 25Ω, the device will emit an audible alarm, indicating continuity.

5.5. Diode Test

  1. Ensure the diode is disconnected from any power source.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the 'Ω' position, then press the 'SEL' button to cycle to the diode test mode (indicated by a diode symbol).
  3. Connect the red test lead to the anode and the black test lead to the cathode of the diode. A forward voltage drop will be displayed.
  4. Reverse the test leads. An open circuit (OL) reading indicates a good diode.

5.6. LAN Cable Testing

  1. Connect one end of the LAN cable to the RJ45 port on the main unit.
  2. Connect the other end of the LAN cable to the RJ45 port on the remote unit.
  3. Press the 'ON/OFF' button for the LAN Cable Tester.
  4. Press the 'TEST' button to initiate the cable test.
  5. Observe the 'PIN-OUT INDICATOR' LEDs (1-8, GND) on the main unit. The LEDs will sequentially light up, indicating the continuity and correct wiring of each pin. Any missing or incorrectly lit LEDs indicate a fault (e.g., open, short, cross-over).

6. Maintenance

6.1. Cleaning

Wipe the device with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure no moisture enters the device.

6.2. Battery Replacement

Replace batteries promptly when the low battery indicator is displayed to ensure accurate measurements and prevent device malfunction. Refer to Section 4.1 for battery installation instructions.

6.3. Storage

When not in use for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage. Store the device in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

7. Troubleshooting

  • No Display/Device Not Powering On: Check battery installation and ensure batteries have sufficient charge. Replace if necessary.
  • Incorrect Readings: Ensure test leads are properly connected and not damaged. Verify the correct measurement function is selected. Check battery level.
  • 'OL' (Overload) Indicator: This indicates the measured value exceeds the selected range. For auto-ranging, it means the value is beyond the device's maximum capability for that function.
  • LAN Test Failure: Check both ends of the LAN cable for proper connection to the main and remote units. Inspect the cable for physical damage. Ensure the LAN tester batteries are charged.
