Introduction
This manual provides essential instructions for the safe installation, operation, and maintenance of your Hampton Bay Wired Door Bell Tri-Volt Transformer. This transformer is designed to provide reliable power for wired doorbells and video doorbells requiring 8V, 16V, or 24V AC power. Please read this manual thoroughly before installation and retain it for future reference.
Safety Information
- Always disconnect power at the circuit breaker before installing, servicing, or removing the transformer. Failure to do so may result in electric shock, injury, or death.
- Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician or a knowledgeable individual familiar with electrical wiring.
- Ensure the transformer's voltage and VA rating match the requirements of your doorbell system. Exceeding the specified VA rating can damage the transformer or connected devices.
- Do not expose the transformer to moisture or extreme temperatures.
- Verify all connections are secure and properly insulated to prevent short circuits.

Setup and Installation
The Hampton Bay Tri-Volt Transformer provides multiple voltage outputs to accommodate various doorbell systems. Refer to the image below for terminal identification.

Image: Close-up view of the Hampton Bay Tri-Volt Doorbell Transformer showing the three wiring terminals. From left to right, the terminals are labeled '8V 10VA', 'LOAD 24V 20VA' (center), and '16V 10VA'. Each terminal has a screw for securing wires.
Wiring Instructions:
- Disconnect Power: Before beginning, turn off the power to your doorbell circuit at the main electrical panel.
- Identify Voltage Requirement: Determine the operating voltage required by your doorbell chime or video doorbell (8V, 16V, or 24V). This information is usually found in your doorbell's instruction manual.
- Connect Input Wires: Connect the 120V AC household wiring to the transformer's primary input terminals. These terminals are typically located on the opposite side of the low-voltage output terminals and are not shown in the provided image. Ensure secure connections.
- Connect Output Wires to Doorbell System: Connect the wires leading to your doorbell chime or video doorbell to the appropriate output terminals on the transformer:
- For 8V Systems: Connect one doorbell wire to the terminal labeled '8V 10VA' and the other doorbell wire to the center terminal labeled 'LOAD 24V 20VA'.
- For 16V Systems: Connect one doorbell wire to the terminal labeled '16V 10VA' and the other doorbell wire to the center terminal labeled 'LOAD 24V 20VA'.
- For 24V Systems (e.g., many video doorbells): Connect one doorbell wire to the terminal labeled '8V 10VA' and the other doorbell wire to the terminal labeled '16V 10VA'. This configuration provides 24V AC.
- Secure Mounting: Mount the transformer securely in a suitable location, such as an electrical box or near your existing doorbell chime, ensuring it is protected from environmental elements.
- Restore Power: Once all connections are made and verified, restore power at the circuit breaker.
Operating Instructions
Once properly installed and powered, the Hampton Bay Tri-Volt Transformer will continuously supply the selected low-voltage AC power to your doorbell system. There are no user-adjustable controls on the transformer itself. Operation is automatic upon power restoration.
Maintenance
- The transformer requires minimal maintenance. Periodically inspect the wiring connections to ensure they remain secure and free from corrosion.
- Keep the transformer free from dust and debris to ensure proper heat dissipation.
- If the transformer shows signs of damage, excessive heat, or emits unusual noises, disconnect power immediately and replace the unit.
Troubleshooting
- No Power to Doorbell:
- Check the circuit breaker to ensure power is supplied to the transformer.
- Verify all wiring connections are secure at both the transformer and the doorbell system.
- Ensure the correct voltage output terminals are used for your doorbell system.
- Doorbell Chime Malfunctions (e.g., weak sound, no sound):
- Confirm the doorbell system is receiving the correct voltage from the transformer.
- Check the doorbell chime unit for any internal issues or loose connections.
- Transformer Buzzing or Getting Hot:
- A slight hum is normal for some transformers. However, a loud buzzing or excessive heat indicates a potential issue.
- Ensure the transformer's VA rating is sufficient for the connected load. Overloading can cause buzzing and overheating.
- Check for short circuits in the doorbell wiring or the doorbell unit itself.
- If buzzing or overheating persists, disconnect power and replace the transformer.
