1. Introduction

The Garmin eTrex 22x is a rugged handheld GPS navigator designed for outdoor enthusiasts. 2. Setup

2.1 Battery Installation

The eTrex 22x operates on two AA batteries, providing up to 25 hours of use in GPS mode. For optimal performance, use high-quality alkaline or NiMH rechargeable batteries.

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
  2. Twist the D-ring counter-clockwise and lift the cover to open.
  3. Insert two AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+ and -).
  4. Replace the battery cover and twist the D-ring clockwise to secure it.

2.2 Initial Power-On

To power on your device, press and hold the Power button located on the side until the screen illuminates. The device will then begin acquiring satellite signals. This may take a few minutes, especially during the first use or if you have moved a significant distance since the last use.

2.3 MicroSD Card Installation (Optional)

To expand storage for additional maps or data, you can install a microSD card (not included).

  1. Open the battery compartment cover.
  2. Locate the microSD card slot, usually near the batteries.
  3. Insert the microSD card into the slot until it clicks into place.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

3. Operating the Device

The eTrex 22x uses a combination of buttons and a joystick for navigation. The main menu provides access to various functions.

3.1 Navigating the Menus

Use the joystick to scroll through menu options and press it to select an item. The Menu button (left side) provides context-sensitive options, while the Back button (right side) returns to the previous screen.

3.2 Using Maps

The device comes preloaded with TopoActive maps. To view the map, select the Map icon from the main menu. You can zoom in and out using the dedicated zoom buttons on the side of the device. The map displays routable roads, trails, and geographical features.

3.3 Navigation and Waypoints

To navigate to a specific location, you can create waypoints or select a destination from the map. The device will provide turn-by-turn directions or a direct route, depending on your settings.

  • Mark Waypoint: From the main menu, select Mark Waypoint to save your current location.
  • Where To?: Select Where To? to search for destinations, including cities, addresses, or saved waypoints.
  • Compass: The compass screen provides directional guidance to your destination.

3.4 Satellite Information

The eTrex 22x supports both GPS and GLONASS satellite systems. To view satellite acquisition status and accuracy, select the Satellite icon from the main menu. This feature ensures reliable tracking even in challenging environments like dense forests or deep canyons.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Device Care

  • Cleaning: Clean the device with a cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution. Wipe it dry. Avoid chemical cleaners and solvents that can damage plastic components.
  • Storage: When storing the device for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Water Resistance: The eTrex 22x is designed to be rugged and water-resistant. However, ensure the battery cover and USB port cover are securely closed to maintain water resistance.

4.2 Software Updates

Periodically check the Garmin website for software updates. Updates can improve performance, add new features, and enhance map data. Connect your device to a computer using the provided USB cable to perform updates.

5. Troubleshooting

5.1 Device Not Powering On

  • Ensure batteries are inserted correctly with proper polarity.
  • Replace old batteries with fresh ones.
  • Check if the battery contacts are clean and free from corrosion.

5.2 Poor Satellite Reception

  • Ensure you are in an open area with a clear view of the sky.
  • Avoid dense tree cover, tall buildings, or deep canyons.
  • Allow sufficient time for the device to acquire satellite signals, especially after initial power-on or long periods of inactivity.
