1. Getting Started
1.1 Package Contents
Verify that your package contains the following items:
- AT&T CL82257 Base Unit
- Two (2) Cordless Handsets
- Two (2) Handset Chargers
- Two (2) Power Adapters for Base Unit and Chargers
- One (1) Telephone Line Cord
- Two (2) Ni-MH Battery Packs
- Two (2) Battery Compartment Covers
1.2 Battery Installation
Before using the phone, install the battery pack in each cordless handset.
- Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the handset.
- Plug the battery pack connector securely into the jack inside the compartment.
- Place the battery pack with the label UP as indicated.
- Close the battery compartment cover.
- Place the handset in the charger to charge for at least 16 hours before first use.

1.3 Base Unit and Charger Connection
Connect the base unit and chargers to power and the telephone line.
- Plug one end of the telephone line cord into the TEL LINE jack on the back of the base unit.
- Plug the other end of the telephone line cord into a telephone wall jack.
- Plug the small end of the base unit power adapter into the POWER jack on the back of the base unit.
- Plug the large end of the base unit power adapter into an electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch.
- For each charger, plug the small end of the charger power adapter into the POWER jack on the back of the charger.
- Plug the large end of the charger power adapter into an electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch.

1.4 Handset Registration
Your handsets are pre-registered to the base unit. If a handset displays "To register HS, see manual" or if you purchase additional handsets, you will need to register them.
- Place the unregistered handset in the base unit charger.
- Press and hold the FIND HS button on the base unit for about 4 seconds until the IN USE light on the base unit turns on.
- While the IN USE light is on, press the # key on the handset.
- The handset will display "Registering..." and then "Handset Registered" when complete.
2. Basic Operations
2.1 Making and Receiving Calls
To make a call:
- Press PHONE or SPEAKER.
- Dial the telephone number.
To receive a call:
- When the phone rings, press PHONE or SPEAKER.
To end a call:
- Press OFF or place the handset in the charger.
2.2 Digital Answering System
The answering system can record up to 22 minutes of messages, announcements, and memos. It features a voice guide for easy setup and operation.
- To turn on/off: Press ANS ON/OFF on the base unit or use the handset menu.
- To play messages: Press PLAY/STOP on the base unit or select "Play messages" from the handset menu.
- To delete messages: During playback, press DELETE on the base unit or select "Delete all old" from the handset menu.
2.3 Smart Call Blocker
The Smart Call Blocker helps screen unwanted calls. It can block up to 1,000 names and numbers.
- To block a call during a call: Press CALL BLOCK on the handset.
- To block a number from Caller ID history: Navigate to the desired entry in the Caller ID log, then press MENU/SELECT and choose "Block number".
- To review blocked numbers: Access the Smart Call Blocker menu via the handset.
2.4 Intercom
You can use the handsets to communicate with each other.
- Press INT on the handset.
- If you have multiple handsets, dial the number of the desired handset (e.g., 2 for handset 2).
- The other handset will ring. To answer, press PHONE or SPEAKER.
2.5 Caller ID
The phone stores the Caller ID information of the last 50 incoming calls.
- Press CID on the handset to review the Caller ID log.
- Use the UP or DOWN arrow keys to scroll through entries.
- To dial a number from the Caller ID log, press PHONE or SPEAKER when the desired entry is displayed.
3. Care and Maintenance
Proper care ensures the longevity of your phone system.
- Cleaning: Clean the phone with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not use cleaning sprays or harsh chemicals.
- Battery Care: To maintain optimal battery performance, avoid overcharging for extended periods once fully charged. If the phone will not be used for a long time, remove the batteries.
- Environmental Conditions: Keep the phone away from excessive heat, direct sunlight, and moisture. Do not immerse any part of the phone in water.
- Avoid Interference: Place the base unit away from other electronic devices such as computers, televisions, and microwave ovens to prevent interference.
