2. Safety Information
To ensure safe and optimal operation of your UV-9R Plus radio, please adhere to the following safety guidelines:
- Do not disassemble or modify the radio. Unauthorized modifications can void the warranty and may cause damage.
- Avoid exposing the radio to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight for prolonged periods, or corrosive substances.
- While the radio is IP67 waterproof, it is not designed for diving. Do not submerge it beyond specified limits or for extended durations.
- Use only the specified battery and charger provided with the radio. Using incompatible accessories may lead to fire, explosion, or injury.
- Keep the radio and its accessories out of reach of children.
- Do not operate the radio in areas with flammable gases or explosives.
- Turn off the radio in aircraft or hospitals where electronic devices may interfere with sensitive equipment.
- When charging, ensure the charger is placed on a stable, non-flammable surface and is well-ventilated.
3. Getting Started

4.2 Channel Selection
Use the UP and DOWN arrow keys on the keypad to navigate through available channels or frequencies. The radio supports 200 channels.
4.3 Push-to-Talk (PTT) Button
Press and hold the large button on the left side of the radio to transmit. Release the button to receive. Ensure you wait for a clear channel before transmitting.
4.4 Dual Watch and Dual Standby
The UV-9R Plus can monitor two different frequencies simultaneously. If a signal is received on either frequency, the radio will switch to that frequency. This feature allows you to stay aware of activity on two channels without manually switching.
4.5 VOX Function (Voice Operated Transmit)
The VOX function allows for hands-free operation. When enabled, the radio will automatically transmit when it detects your voice, and stop transmitting when you stop speaking. Refer to the on-screen menu for VOX sensitivity adjustment.
5. Advanced Features
5.1 High & Low Power Output
The radio offers switchable power output levels: 8W (High), 5W (Medium), and 1W (Low). Higher power provides greater range but consumes more battery. Lower power is suitable for short-range communication and conserves battery life. This can typically be adjusted via the menu or a dedicated button.

5.2 CTCSS and DCS Codes
CTCSS (Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System) and DCS (Digitally Coded Squelch) are sub-audible tones that allow multiple users to share a single radio channel without hearing each other's transmissions. Your radio supports 50 CTCSS and 104 DCS codes. To communicate, both radios must be set to the same frequency and the same CTCSS/DCS code.
5.3 ANI and DTMF Codes
ANI (Automatic Number Identification) and DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency) codes are used for signaling purposes. ANI can transmit your radio's ID, while DTMF allows for remote control functions or selective calling. Consult the full user manual for programming these features.
5.4 Time-out Timer (TOT)
The TOT feature prevents any single user from occupying a channel for too long. If the transmission exceeds the preset time, the radio will automatically stop transmitting. This helps manage channel traffic and prevent overheating.
5.5 Automatic Keypad Lock
This function automatically locks the keypad after a period of inactivity to prevent accidental key presses. You can typically enable or disable this feature and adjust the lock delay in the radio's menu settings.
5.6 Busy Channel Lock Function
When enabled, this feature prevents the radio from transmitting on a channel that is already in use. This avoids interference and ensures clear communication by preventing simultaneous transmissions.
5.7 Emergency Alarm
The emergency alarm function can be activated to send out an alert signal in critical situations. This feature is designed to quickly notify others of your distress. Refer to the radio's menu for setting up and activating the emergency alarm.
5.8 Priority Scanning Function
This feature allows the radio to continuously monitor a designated priority channel while scanning other channels. If activity is detected on the priority channel, the radio will automatically switch to it, ensuring you don't miss important communications.
5.9 Built-in Flashlight
The UV-9R Plus includes a convenient LED flashlight located at the top of the radio, useful for low-light conditions. This can typically be activated via a dedicated button or a menu option.

6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth to clean the radio's surface. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Battery Care: To prolong battery life, avoid fully discharging the battery frequently. Charge the battery regularly, even if the radio is not in use for extended periods. Store the battery in a cool, dry place.
- Storage: When storing the radio for a long time, remove the battery pack. Store the radio in a dry, dust-free environment away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Waterproofing Seals: Periodically inspect the rubber seals around the battery compartment and accessory jacks to ensure they are free from dirt or damage, which could compromise the IP67 rating.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Radio does not power on. | Battery is low or not installed correctly. | Charge the battery or re-install it securely. |
| Cannot transmit or receive. | Incorrect frequency/channel, antenna not attached, or busy channel lock enabled. | Verify frequency, attach antenna, disable busy channel lock. |
| Poor audio quality or static. | Weak signal, antenna issue, or squelch level too low. | Move closer to other radios, check antenna connection, adjust squelch level. |
| Battery drains quickly. | High power setting, frequent transmissions, or aging battery. | Use low power when possible, reduce transmission time, consider replacing battery. |
| Keypad is unresponsive. | Keypad lock is active. | Unlock the keypad (refer to your radio's specific unlock combination, often by holding the '#' key). |
