Introduction

The Chauvet Xpress 1024 is a self-contained DMX interface designed for use with the ShowXpress software. This device allows for comprehensive control of lighting fixtures, transmitting two DMX universes and unlocking an additional ArtNet universe, totaling three universes of control. It is compatible with both Windows and Mac OS X systems and can store and play back one show without requiring a computer connection. Multiple interfaces can be connected to expand control over additional universes. The unit features built-in optical isolation and ground loop protection circuits for reliable operation.

Setup

1. Software Installation: Download and install the latest version of the ShowXpress software from the official CHAUVET DJ website. Ensure your operating system (Windows or Mac OS X) meets the software requirements.
2. Connect the Interface: Connect the Chauvet Xpress 1024 to your computer using a standard USB cable. The USB and PWR indicator lights on the unit should illuminate, indicating a successful connection and power supply.
3. Connect DMX Fixtures: Connect your DMX-compatible lighting fixtures to the DMX OUT 1 and DMX OUT 2 ports on the rear of the Xpress 1024 using 3-pin DMX cables. Each port provides a full DMX universe (512 channels).
4. Launch ShowXpress: Open the ShowXpress software. The software should automatically detect the connected Xpress 1024 interface.
5. Configure Universes: Within the ShowXpress software, configure your DMX universes and assign your lighting fixtures to the appropriate channels. The Xpress 1024 provides two physical DMX universes and can unlock an additional ArtNet universe for a total of three universes.

Operating Instructions

• Creating Shows: Utilize the ShowXpress software to design and program your lighting shows. The software offers extensive features for scene creation, effect generation, and timeline sequencing.
• Live Control: Use the software interface to control your lighting fixtures in real-time during live performances or events.
• Standalone Playback: The Xpress 1024 can store and play back one show without a computer connection. To use this feature, program your desired show in ShowXpress and then upload it to the interface's internal memory. Once uploaded, the unit can operate independently.
• Expanding Universes: For larger setups requiring more than three universes, multiple Xpress 1024 interfaces can be connected to the same computer. The ShowXpress software will recognize and manage these additional interfaces.

Maintenance

• Cleaning: Regularly clean the exterior of the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents.
• Storage: When not in use, store the Xpress 1024 in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
• Cable Management: Ensure DMX and USB cables are not kinked or strained. Proper cable management helps prevent damage to the ports and cables.
• Software Updates: Periodically check the CHAUVET DJ website for software updates for ShowXpress. Keeping the software updated ensures optimal performance and access to new features.

Troubleshooting

• No DMX Output:
  • Verify that the USB cable is securely connected to both the Xpress 1024 and your computer.
  • Check the USB and PWR indicator lights on the Xpress 1024. If they are not illuminated, ensure the USB port on your computer is providing power.
  • Within the ShowXpress software, navigate to Settings > Preferences > STEPS. Ensure the DMX indicator is GREEN, not RED (blackout). This is a common configuration oversight.
  • Confirm that your DMX fixtures are properly addressed and patched within the ShowXpress software.
• Software Not Recognizing Interface:
  • Try disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable.
  • Restart the ShowXpress software and/or your computer.
  • Ensure that the correct drivers for the Xpress 1024 are installed. These are typically included with the ShowXpress software installation.
• Intermittent Connection:
  • Use a high-quality USB cable.
  • Avoid placing the unit near strong electromagnetic interference sources.
  • The unit features optical isolation and ground loop protection, but ensuring proper grounding of all connected equipment is always recommended.
