Setup
1. Battery Installation
- Ensure the radio is powered off.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the radio.
- Slide the cover down and remove it.
- Insert the 1000mAh Li-ion battery, ensuring the contacts align correctly.
- Replace the battery compartment cover and slide it up until it clicks into place.
2. Charging the Battery
Before first use, fully charge the battery. The RT16 uses a 1000mAh rechargeable Li-ion battery.
- Connect the USB charging cable to the USB port on the side of the radio.
- Connect the other end of the USB cable to a compatible USB power adapter (not included) or a computer USB port.
- The charging indicator on the radio (if available) will show charging status. Refer to the LCD display for battery level.
- A full charge typically takes several hours. Disconnect the charger once charging is complete.

Operating Instructions
1. Power On/Off and Volume Adjustment
- To turn the radio ON, rotate the Power/Volume knob clockwise until you hear a click and the display illuminates.
- To turn the radio OFF, rotate the Power/Volume knob counter-clockwise until you hear a click.
- To adjust the volume, rotate the Power/Volume knob clockwise to increase and counter-clockwise to decrease.
2. Channel Selection
The RT16 features 22 channels. To select a channel:
- Press the Menu button once. The channel number on the LCD display will flash.
- Use the Up or Down arrow keys to select your desired channel (1-22).
- Press the Menu button again to confirm your selection.
3. Transmitting and Receiving (PTT)
- To transmit, press and hold the PTT (Push-to-Talk) button on the side of the radio. Speak clearly into the microphone.
- Release the PTT button to stop transmitting and listen for a response.
- Ensure all radios are on the same channel for successful communication.
4. VOX Function (Hands-Free Operation)
The Voice Operated Exchange (VOX) function allows you to transmit without pressing the PTT button. It has 0-5 sensitivity levels (0=off, 5=most sensitive).
- Press the Menu button repeatedly until the VOX icon appears on the display.
- Use the Up or Down arrow keys to select a VOX sensitivity level (1-5). Select '0' to disable VOX.
- Press the Menu button to confirm.

5. NOAA Weather Alert
The RT16 includes 11 NOAA weather alert channels to keep you informed of weather conditions and hazards.
- Press the CALL/NOAA button to cycle through NOAA weather channels.
- The radio will automatically scan for active weather alerts on these channels.

6. Squelch Function
The squelch function helps to eliminate weak background noise and static. It has 0-9 options (0=off, 9=maximum squelch).
- Press the Menu button repeatedly until the squelch icon appears.
- Use the Up or Down arrow keys to select a squelch level. Higher levels block more noise but may also block weak signals.
- Press the Menu button to confirm.
7. LED Flashlight
The built-in LED flashlight can be activated for convenience in low-light conditions.
- Press the LED Switch button (usually located near the top of the radio) to turn the flashlight on.
- Press it again to turn the flashlight off.

8. Dual Watch Function
The dual watch function allows you to monitor two channels simultaneously, ensuring you don't miss any calls.

9. One Key Group Call

Maintenance
- Cleaning: Clean the radio's surface with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Battery Care: To prolong battery life, avoid overcharging and fully discharging the battery. Store batteries in a cool, dry place when not in use.
- Storage: Store the radio in a dry, dust-free environment away from extreme temperatures.
- Water Resistance: The Retevis RT16 is not water-resistant. Avoid exposing it to water or high humidity.
Troubleshooting
- No Power: Check if the battery is correctly installed and fully charged. Ensure the Power/Volume knob is turned on.
- Cannot Transmit/Receive: Verify that all radios are on the same channel. Check if the battery level is sufficient. Ensure the PTT button is fully pressed when transmitting.
- Poor Audio Quality/Static: Adjust the squelch level. Move to an area with fewer obstructions. Check for interference from other electronic devices.
- Short Range: Ensure the antenna is securely attached. Obstructions like buildings, hills, or dense foliage can reduce range.
