3. Setup and Installation
The Rain Bird Drip Irrigation Kit features a simple 3-step installation process. Ensure you have all components listed in Section 2 before beginning.
3.1. System Overview
The system connects to an outside faucet or hose. The 1/2-inch tubing acts as the main supply line, running on top of the soil to your planting area. From this main line, 1/4-inch tubing is inserted to reach individual plants, where drippers, micro-bubblers, or micro-sprays are attached.

3.2. Step-by-Step Installation
- Connect to Faucet: Attach the pressure regulator and backflow preventer to your outside faucet or garden hose. Then, connect the 1/2-inch tubing to the adapter.
- Run Main Tubing: Lay the 1/2-inch tubing on top of the soil to your planting area. Use 1/2-inch barbed couplings, tees, and elbows to extend and route the main tubing as needed.
- Insert 1/4-inch Tubing: Insert 1/4-inch tubing into the side of the 1/2-inch tubing using 1/4-inch barbed couplings. Run the 1/4-inch tubing to individual plants.
- Attach Watering Devices: Connect drippers, micro-bubblers, or micro-sprays to the ends of the 1/4-inch tubing. Use the emitter installation/removal tool for easier insertion and removal of barbed fittings and drippers.
- Secure Tubing: Use galvanized metal stakes and 1/4-inch tubing stakes to secure the tubing in place. You can cover the tubing with soil or mulch to hide it.

4. Operating Instructions
Once installed, your drip irrigation system is ready for operation. The pressure-compensating technology ensures all plants receive the same amount of water regardless of their position along the tubing run.
4.1. Adjusting Watering Devices
Drippers provide precise, localized watering. Micro-bubblers and micro-sprays offer wider coverage for more broadly spaced plants. Some micro-sprays and bubblers may have adjustable caps to control the flow rate and spray pattern. Turn the cap clockwise to reduce flow and counter-clockwise to increase flow.
4.2. Automation (Optional)
To automate your watering schedule, you can add a Rain Bird 1ZEHTMR Hose-End Timer (sold separately). This allows for scheduled watering without manual intervention.
5. Maintenance
The Rain Bird drip irrigation system is designed for minimal maintenance. The watering devices are clog-resistant, providing reliable watering. Regularly inspect the system for any visible leaks or damage to the tubing or connections. Ensure the filter is clean to prevent sediment buildup, which can affect system performance.
6. Troubleshooting
- Uneven Water Distribution: Ensure all emitters are clear of debris. Verify that the pressure regulator is functioning correctly to maintain consistent water pressure throughout the system.
- Leaks at Connections: If leaks occur, especially in cooler temperatures, ensure all connections are secure. For barbed fittings, hot water can be used to soften tubing for a tighter fit during installation.
- Low Flow/No Flow: Check the water source for adequate pressure. Inspect the filter for clogs and clean if necessary. Ensure all valves (if using a timer or manifold) are fully open.
