Setup and Assembly
Assembly is required before first use. Follow these steps to prepare your trimmer/edger:
1. Attach the Guard
- Ensure the trimmer is unplugged from the power source.
- Slide the guard onto the trimmer head until it clicks securely into place. Ensure it is firmly seated and cannot be easily removed.

2. Attach the Auxiliary Handle
- Loosen the knob on the auxiliary handle.
- Slide the handle onto the trimmer shaft to a comfortable position.
- Tighten the knob to secure the handle.
3. Adjust Handle Position
- Adjust the auxiliary handle up or down the shaft to find the most comfortable operating position for your height and reach.
- Ensure the handle is securely tightened before operation.

4. Spool Installation (if not pre-installed)
- Ensure the trimmer is unplugged.
- Remove the spool cap by pressing the tabs on the sides.
- Place the AF-100 spool into the spool housing, ensuring the line feeds through the eyelet.
- Replace the spool cap, ensuring it clicks into place.
Operating Instructions
This tool functions as both a string trimmer and an edger. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses and gloves, during operation.
Trimming Operation
- Connect the trimmer to a suitable outdoor extension cord, ensuring the cord is rated for outdoor use and in good condition.
- Hold the trimmer firmly with both hands, one on the main handle and one on the auxiliary handle.
- Position the trimmer head parallel to the ground, slightly above the grass or weeds to be cut.
- Press the trigger to start the motor.
- Move the trimmer in a side-to-side sweeping motion, cutting small amounts of material at a time.
- The Automatic Feed System (AFS) will advance the line as needed during operation.

Edging Operation
- Ensure the trimmer is unplugged.
- To convert to edging mode, rotate the shaft 180 degrees until the head is perpendicular to the ground. Some models may have a foot pedal or button for this rotation.
- Connect the trimmer to power.
- Hold the trimmer firmly and guide the wheel along the edge of your lawn, driveway, or flower beds.
- Press the trigger to start the motor and move steadily along the edge.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your tool. Always unplug the trimmer before performing any maintenance.
Cleaning
- After each use, clean the trimmer housing and guard with a damp cloth.

Line Replacement
- When the trimmer line runs out, replace it with a BLACK+DECKER AF-100 replacement spool.
