Hoffen Universal Outboard Motor Water Flusher

Instruction Manual

1. Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the proper use and maintenance of your Hoffen Universal Outboard Motor Water Flusher. This device is designed to facilitate the flushing of outboard marine engines, helping to remove salt, silt, and grime from the cooling system after use. Regular flushing extends the life of your engine.

2. Safety Information

  • Always ensure the engine is turned off and cooled down before attaching the flusher.
  • Do not operate the engine at high RPMs while flushing. Follow your engine manufacturer's recommendations for flushing procedures.
  • Ensure a secure connection to the garden hose to prevent leaks and maintain adequate water pressure.
  • Keep hands and loose clothing clear of the propeller when the engine is running.
  • Always supervise children and pets around operating machinery.

4. Setup

  1. Position the Flusher: Locate the water intake ports on the lower unit of your outboard motor. These are typically small grates or openings on the side of the lower unit.
  2. Attach the Cups: Place the rectangular ear muff cups of the flusher over the water intake ports. Ensure that the cups completely cover the intake ports to create a seal. The metal frame of the flusher should hold the cups firmly against the motor.

  4. Connect the Hose: Screw a standard garden hose onto the threaded connection point on the flusher. Hand-tighten until secure.

5. Operating Instructions

  1. Turn on Water: Slowly turn on the water supply to the garden hose. Ensure a steady flow of water through the flusher and into the engine's cooling system. Check for any significant leaks around the ear muff cups.
  2. Start Engine: Once water is flowing, start your outboard motor according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Flush Engine: Allow the engine to run at a low idle for approximately 5-10 minutes, or as recommended by your engine manufacturer. This allows fresh water to circulate through the cooling system, flushing out salt, sand, and other debris.
  4. Turn off Engine: After the recommended flushing time, turn off the outboard motor.
  5. Turn off Water: Turn off the water supply to the garden hose.
  6. Remove Flusher: Disconnect the garden hose and remove the flusher from the outboard motor.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, rinse the flusher with fresh water to remove any salt or debris.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the PVC ear muff cups for cracks, tears, or signs of wear. The black PVC cap is designed for UV protection and corrosion resistance, contributing to a long service life.
  • Storage: Store the flusher in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Poor Seal/Water Leakage:
    • Ensure the ear muff cups are centered and firmly pressed against the engine's water intake ports.
    • Check for debris between the cups and the engine surface.
    • Inspect the cups for damage or deformation.
  • Low Water Flow:
    • Verify that the garden hose is fully connected and not kinked.
    • Ensure the water supply faucet is fully open.
    • Check for blockages in the hose or flusher connection.
  • Engine Overheating During Flush:
    • Immediately shut off the engine.
    • Re-check the flusher's seal and water flow.
    • Consult your engine's owner's manual for specific flushing requirements or potential engine issues.
