5. Setup and Installation
Follow these steps for proper assembly and installation of your Retevis MA01 antenna.
5.1 Assembly
- Carefully unpack all components and verify against the package contents list.
- Attach the ground plane radials to the base of the main antenna element. Ensure they are securely fastened using the provided hardware and Allen key.
- Connect the upper sections of the antenna radiator, if applicable, ensuring all connections are tight.

5.2 Mounting Location
Choose an installation location that is:
- As high as possible to maximize line-of-sight.
- Clear of obstructions such as buildings, trees, and metal structures that could interfere with signal.
- Away from power lines and other electrical hazards.
- Accessible for future maintenance.
5.3 Antenna Mounting
- Secure the mounting bracket to a sturdy mast or pole using the U-bolts and nuts. Ensure the bracket is level and firmly attached.
- Attach the assembled antenna to the mounting bracket. Tighten all bolts to prevent movement.
- Important: After final adjustments, ensure proper waterproofing of all connections to prevent moisture ingress, as recommended by user experience.

5.4 Coaxial Cable Connection
- Connect a high-quality 50-ohm coaxial cable with an SL16 (UHF-Male) connector to the antenna's SL16 (UHF-Female) port.
- Ensure the connection is tight and apply weatherproofing tape or sealant to protect it from environmental elements.
- Route the coaxial cable safely, avoiding sharp bends or kinks that could damage the cable.

5.5 Frequency Adjustment (Tuning)
The antenna features markings for frequency adjustment. Use the provided Allen key to adjust the length of the radiating element to optimize performance for your specific operating frequency within the 390-470 MHz range.
- Loosen the set screw on the adjustable element using the Allen key.
- Slide the element to align with your desired frequency marking.
- Tighten the set screw firmly to secure the element in place.
- It is highly recommended to use an SWR meter to fine-tune the antenna for the lowest Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) at your primary operating frequency. An SWR of 1.5:1 or lower is generally acceptable.

6. Operating Instructions
Once the Retevis MA01 antenna is properly installed and tuned, connect it to your UHF radio transceiver or repeater. Refer to your radio's user manual for specific operating procedures.
- Ensure your radio is set to the correct UHF frequency within the antenna's operational range (390-470 MHz).
- Always check the SWR before transmitting, especially after initial installation or any adjustments. High SWR can damage your radio's final amplifier.
- Operate your radio according to all applicable regulations and licensing requirements.
7. Maintenance
Regular maintenance will ensure optimal performance and longevity of your antenna.
- Visual Inspection: Periodically inspect the antenna for any physical damage, such as bent elements, loose connections, or corrosion.
- Connection Check: Verify that all mounting hardware and coaxial cable connections remain tight and free from corrosion. Re-apply weatherproofing if necessary.
- Cleaning: Clean the antenna elements with a soft cloth and mild detergent if they become excessively dirty. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
- SWR Check: Re-check SWR periodically, especially after severe weather conditions, to ensure the antenna's performance has not degraded.
8. Troubleshooting
If you experience issues with your Retevis MA01 antenna, refer to the following troubleshooting guide:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Poor signal reception/transmission | High SWR Loose or corroded connections Antenna not tuned correctly Obstructions in line of sight Damaged coaxial cable | Check SWR and adjust antenna tuning Inspect and tighten all connections; clean corrosion Verify tuning against desired frequency Relocate antenna to a clearer spot Inspect and replace damaged cable |
| Antenna unstable/loose | Loose mounting hardware Inadequate mounting structure | Tighten all U-bolts and bracket screws Reinforce or replace mounting mast/structure |
