4.1 Power On/Off and Volume Adjustment

  • To turn the radio ON, rotate the Power/Volume switch clockwise until you hear a click and a voice prompt.
  • To turn the radio OFF, rotate the Power/Volume switch counter-clockwise until you hear a click.
  • To adjust the volume, rotate the Power/Volume switch clockwise to increase volume and counter-clockwise to decrease volume while the radio is on.

4.2 Channel Selection

4.3 Transmitting and Receiving

  • To transmit, press and hold the PTT (Push-to-Talk) button on the side of the radio. Speak clearly into the microphone, holding the radio approximately 2-5 cm from your mouth. The status indicator light will typically glow red during transmission.
  • To receive, release the PTT button. The status indicator light will typically glow green when receiving a signal.

4.4 VOX Function (Voice Operated Exchange)

  • The VOX function allows for hands-free transmission. When activated, the radio will automatically transmit when it detects your voice.
  • Activation/Deactivation: The VOX function is typically enabled or disabled via programming software or a specific key combination. Refer to the detailed user manual (if provided separately) or contact Retevis support for specific instructions on how to activate or deactivate VOX, especially if unintended transmissions occur.

4.5 Squelch Function

  • The squelch function automatically mutes the speaker when no signal is being received, eliminating static noise. The RT648's squelch is designed to provide clear audio. This function is usually automatic and does not require user adjustment for basic operation.

5. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your RT648 walkie-talkie.

  • Cleaning: Due to its IP67 rating, the radio can be cleaned with a damp cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a mild soap solution and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Ensure all ports are closed before cleaning with water. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Battery Care:
    • Charge the battery fully before first use.
    • Avoid overcharging or completely draining the battery.
    • If storing the radio for an extended period, charge the battery to about 50% and remove it from the radio. Store in a cool, dry place.
  • General Handling:
    • Avoid dropping the radio or subjecting it to severe impacts.
    • Do not disassemble the radio. Unauthorized disassembly will void the warranty.
    • Keep the radio away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your RT648, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Radio does not power on.Battery is low or not installed correctly.Ensure battery is fully charged and properly seated.
Cannot transmit or receive.Incorrect channel selected; out of range; antenna loose.Verify all radios are on the same channel. Move closer to other radios. Check antenna connection.
Poor audio quality or static.Weak signal; interference; squelch level too low.Move to an area with better signal. Ensure no strong interference sources nearby.
Radio transmits automatically (VOX issue).VOX function is active and sensitive to ambient noise.Deactivate VOX function. If unable to do so via radio controls, programming software may be required. Contact Retevis support for guidance.
Battery drains quickly.Frequent transmission; old battery; extreme temperatures.Reduce transmission time. Replace battery if old. Avoid using in extreme temperatures.

If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, please contact Retevis customer support.
