1. Product Overview

The STEELMATE SBS-1 is a microwave-based blind spot detection system designed to enhance driving safety. It identifies vehicles in the blind spot areas on both sides of your vehicle, which are not visible through standard rearview or side mirrors. When a vehicle enters the detection zone during overtaking or lane changes, the system provides an audible and visual alert to the driver.

5. Setup and Installation

The STEELMATE SBS-1 system is designed for straightforward installation. It features a patented display for the A-pillar that does not require stickers or glue, and its ON/OFF function is optional. The radar sensors are designed to be mounted behind the bumper without drilling holes.

5.1 Sensor Placement

The 79GHz microwave radar sensors should be installed behind the rear bumper. Ensure the sensors are positioned correctly to achieve the optimal 120° Field of View (FOV) for blind spot detection. No drilling is required; the sensors can be adhered to the bumper's inner surface.

5.2 ECU and Wiring Connection

Connect the sensors, display, and vehicle power supply to the ECU using the provided main and display wiring harnesses. Ensure all connections are secure and properly insulated. The ECU operates on DC 9-30V, making it compatible with both 12V and 24V vehicle electrical systems.

5.3 Display Installation

The visual alert display can be inserted anywhere between the A-pillar and the dashboard. It provides visual warnings and can be optionally turned ON or OFF. The display is designed to be discreet and integrate seamlessly into the vehicle's interior.

6. Operating Instructions

Once installed and powered, the STEELMATE SBS-1 system continuously monitors your vehicle's blind spots using its 79GHz microwave radar sensors. The system activates when your vehicle's speed is within the relative speed range of >5 km/h (3.1 mph) and <40 km/h (24.9 mph) relative to other vehicles.

6.1 Detection Principle

The sensors detect objects within a range of at least 5 meters (16.4 ft) and a 120° field of view. When another vehicle enters this detection zone, the system processes the information through the ECU.

6.2 Alert System

Upon detecting a vehicle in the blind spot, the system provides both visual and audible alerts:

• Visual Alert: The A-pillar display will illuminate or flash, indicating a detected object.
• Audible Alert: A buzzer will sound at a frequency of 1KHz±0.1KHz, providing an auditory warning.

These alerts are designed to draw the driver's attention to potential hazards during lane changes or overtaking maneuvers.

• Sensor Cleaning: Periodically inspect the areas where the sensors are installed (behind the bumper) and ensure they are free from excessive dirt, mud, snow, or ice. While the sensors are IP67 rated for dust and water resistance, heavy accumulation can obstruct their operation.
• Wiring Inspection: Occasionally check the wiring harnesses for any signs of wear, damage, or loose connections.
• System Check: If you notice any unusual behavior or a lack of alerts when expected, perform a basic system check by driving in conditions where the system should activate.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your STEELMATE SBS-1 system, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:

• No Alerts:
  • Ensure the system is powered on and all connections are secure.
  • Verify that the display's optional ON/OFF function is set to ON.
  • Check if sensors are obstructed by dirt or debris.
  • Confirm that the relative speed conditions for activation are met (>5km/h and <40km/h).
• False Alerts:
  • Ensure sensors are correctly installed and not pointing at parts of your own vehicle or fixed objects.
  • Check for any loose wiring that might cause intermittent signals.
• Intermittent Operation:
  • Inspect all wiring for damage or corrosion.
  • Ensure stable power supply to the ECU.
