Introduction
The Joseph Joseph Totem Max 60 Liter Waste Separation and Recycling Kitchen Trash Can is an integrated solution for managing household waste and recycling. This 2nd generation unit features a vertical design to optimize space, offering two main compartments for general waste and recycling, along with a removable food waste caddy. It is designed for ease of use, cleaning, and odor control.
Key Features
- Space-Saving Vertical Design: Two vertically arranged compartments maximize capacity in a compact footprint.
- Dual Compartments: An 8-gallon (30-liter) general waste compartment at the top and an 8-gallon (30-liter) multi-purpose recycling drawer at the base.
- Removable Inner Buckets: Each compartment includes a removable bucket with liner retaining holes and carrier bag hooks for easy bag changes and cleaning. Breather vents facilitate bag removal.
- Integrated Odor Filter: A replaceable carbon filter located in the main lid helps to eliminate odors.
- Removable Food Waste Caddy: A 0.8-gallon (3-liter) caddy with a lid can be stored within the general waste compartment, the multi-purpose drawer, or on a countertop.
- Wheeled Base: The recycling drawer features wheels for smooth and easy access.
- Durable Finish: Stainless-steel versions feature a fingerprint-proof coating.
Setup
- Unpack the Unit: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Ensure all parts listed in the 'What's in the Box' section are present.
- Position the Unit: Place the Totem Max on a flat, stable surface in your desired kitchen location. Its vertical design allows it to fit efficiently in various spaces.
- Install Odor Filter: Locate the odor filter compartment on the underside of the main lid. Insert the carbon filter as directed.
- Prepare Inner Buckets: Place the two inner buckets into their respective compartments (one in the top, one in the bottom drawer). Secure appropriate trash liners using the integrated bag hooks and liner retaining holes.
- Position Food Waste Caddy: The removable 0.8-gallon food waste caddy can be placed inside the top general waste compartment, the bottom recycling drawer, or used independently on a countertop.

Using the General Waste Compartment (Top)
- To open the lid, gently press the handle located at the front. The lid will open smoothly.
- Dispose of general waste into the top inner bucket.

Using the Food Waste Caddy
- Lift the lid of the food waste caddy to add organic waste.
- Ensure the caddy lid is closed after use to help contain odors.
- Empty the caddy regularly into a compost pile or designated collection.
Maintenance
Cleaning the Unit
- Exterior: Wipe the exterior with a soft, damp cloth and a mild detergent. For stainless steel models, use a stainless steel cleaner to maintain its fingerprint-proof finish. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
- Inner Buckets: Remove the inner buckets and wash them with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry before returning them to the unit.
- Food Waste Caddy: Wash the food waste caddy and its lid with warm, soapy water after each emptying.
Odor Filter Replacement
- The carbon odor filter should be replaced every 3 months, or sooner if odors persist.
- To replace, open the main lid, locate the filter compartment, remove the old filter, and insert a new one.
Troubleshooting
- Lid not closing properly: Check for any obstructions around the lid mechanism or the inner bucket. Ensure the inner bucket is correctly seated.
- Odor persists: Replace the carbon odor filter. Ensure the food waste caddy is emptied and cleaned regularly, and its lid is properly closed.
- Recycling drawer sticking: Check for debris or obstructions in the drawer's runners or under the wheels. Clean the area and ensure the drawer is aligned correctly.
