Operating Instructions: Lens Calibration

This tool is used in conjunction with your camera's autofocus micro-adjustment or AF fine-tune feature. Refer to your camera's manual for specific instructions on accessing and adjusting these settings.

  1. Camera Setup:
    • Place your camera on a sturdy tripod, ensuring it is level and positioned directly in front of the calibration tool.
    • The distance between your camera and the tool should be appropriate for the lens's focal length (e.g., 50x the focal length for a 50mm lens).
    • Set your camera to its widest aperture (lowest f-number) to minimize depth of field, making focus errors more apparent.
    • Use a single autofocus point, targeting the center of the bullseye on the calibration tool.
    • Set your camera to a low ISO and use a shutter speed fast enough to prevent camera shake.
  2. Initial Test Shot: Take a test shot, focusing precisely on the center target.
  3. Analyze Focus: Review the image on your camera's LCD or a computer. Observe the ruler on the calibration tool.
    • If the '0' mark is sharpest, your lens is accurately focused.
    • If numbers behind the '0' mark are sharper, your lens is front-focusing.
    • If numbers in front of the '0' mark are sharper, your lens is back-focusing.

  4. Adjust Micro-Adjustment: Access your camera's AF micro-adjustment/fine-tune settings.
    • For front-focusing issues, adjust the setting towards the negative values.
    • For back-focusing issues, adjust the setting towards the positive values.
    • Make small adjustments (e.g., +5 or -5) at a time.
  5. Repeat and Refine: Take another test shot after each adjustment. Continue this process until the '0' mark on the ruler is consistently the sharpest point in your image.
  6. Save Profile: Once calibrated, save the adjustment as a lens profile in your camera (if supported). This allows your camera to apply the correction automatically when that specific lens is attached.

Using the Gray Card for White Balance

The Vello LENS-2020 includes a gray card for setting custom white balance, ensuring accurate color reproduction in your photographs.

  1. Position the Gray Card: Place the gray card in the same lighting conditions as your subject.Vello LENS-2020 Lens Calibration Tool folded with the gray card removed

  4. Apply White Balance: Your camera will now apply the custom white balance setting, providing neutral colors for subsequent photos taken under the same lighting.
