2. Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent injury or damage:

  • Disconnect the vehicle's battery negative terminal before installing any audio components.
  • Ensure all wiring is properly routed and secured to prevent pinching or damage.
  • Use appropriate wire gauges for power and ground connections as specified in this manual.
  • Avoid mounting the amplifier in locations exposed to direct sunlight, excessive heat, or moisture.
  • Do not operate the amplifier with damaged wiring or components.
  • Prolonged exposure to high sound pressure levels can cause permanent hearing loss. Adjust volume to a safe level.

3. Package Contents

Verify that your package contains the following items:

  • Kicker 46CXA8001 Mono Class D Subwoofer Amplifier
  • Mounting Hardware (screws, washers)
  • Owner's Manual

The Kicker 46CXA8001 amplifier offers a range of features designed for optimal subwoofer performance:

  • High-Efficiency Class D Design: Provides significant power output with minimal heat generation.
  • Variable 12dB Crossover: Allows precise tuning of the low-pass filter frequency.
  • KickEQ 6dB Variable Bass Boost: Enhances low-frequency response for deeper bass.
  • 24dB Subsonic Filter: Protects subwoofers from damaging ultra-low frequencies.
  • 1-Ohm Stable Operation: Supports a wide range of subwoofer configurations.
  • Flexible Mounting Options: Includes hardware for both vertical and horizontal installation.
  • Wide Input Voltage Range: Operates with as little as nine volts and accepts up to 40 volts (400 watts) of speaker-level input signal.

5. Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the performance and longevity of your amplifier. If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, consult a professional car audio installer.

5.1 Mounting the Amplifier

Choose a mounting location that provides adequate ventilation and protects the amplifier from moisture. The amplifier can be mounted horizontally or vertically using the supplied hardware.

  • Ensure the mounting surface is solid and free from obstructions.
  • Drill pilot holes for the mounting screws, taking care not to damage any vehicle components behind the surface.
  • Secure the amplifier firmly using the provided screws and washers.

5.2 Wiring Connections

All wiring connections should be made with the vehicle's battery disconnected.

5.2.1 Power Connection (+12V)

Connect a suitable gauge power wire directly from the vehicle's positive battery terminal to the +12V terminal on the amplifier. An inline fuse holder with the appropriate fuse rating (refer to specifications) must be installed within 18 inches (45 cm) of the battery.

5.2.2 Ground Connection (GND)

Connect a wire of the same gauge as the power wire from the GND terminal on the amplifier to a clean, solid metal point on the vehicle's chassis. Ensure the connection point is free of paint, rust, or debris for optimal conductivity.

5.2.3 Remote Turn-On Connection (REM)

Connect a 18-gauge wire from the REM terminal on the amplifier to the remote turn-on output of your source unit (head unit). This wire signals the amplifier to turn on and off with the source unit.

5.2.4 Input Connections

The CXA8001 amplifier supports both low-level (RCA) and high-level (speaker-level) inputs.

  • Low-Level Input (RCA): Connect RCA cables from the subwoofer output of your source unit to the INPUT RCA jacks on the amplifier.
  • High-Level Input (Speaker-Level): If your source unit does not have RCA outputs, connect the speaker wires from your source unit directly to the INPUT terminals on the amplifier. Ensure correct polarity.

5.2.5 Speaker Output Connection

Connect your subwoofer(s) to the SPEAKER terminals on the amplifier. Ensure the total impedance of the connected subwoofers is within the amplifier's stable operating range (1-Ohm minimum). Observe correct polarity for all speaker connections.

6.1 Gain Control

The GAIN control matches the amplifier's input sensitivity to the output level of your source unit. To set the gain:

  1. Turn the GAIN control on the amplifier all the way down (counter-clockwise).
  2. Turn the source unit volume up to about 75% of its maximum level.
  3. Slowly increase the GAIN control on the amplifier until you hear slight audible distortion, then back it off slightly.

6.2 Low-Pass Filter (LPF) Crossover

The LPF control sets the upper frequency limit for the subwoofer. Frequencies above this setting will be filtered out. Adjust this control to blend the subwoofer's output seamlessly with your main speakers.

6.3 Bass Boost (KickEQ)

The BASS BOOST control provides an adjustable low-frequency enhancement. Use this sparingly to add impact to your bass. Excessive bass boost can lead to distortion and potential damage to your subwoofers.

6.4 Subsonic Filter

The SUBSONIC FILTER removes ultra-low frequencies that are below the audible range and can cause subwoofers to over-excurt without producing useful sound. This protects your subwoofers and improves overall sound quality. Adjust this to a frequency slightly below the tuning frequency of your ported enclosure, or around 25-30 Hz for sealed enclosures.

7. Maintenance

The Kicker 46CXA8001 amplifier requires minimal maintenance. Follow these guidelines:

  • Periodically inspect all wiring connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion.
  • Keep the amplifier clean and free of dust and debris. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
  • Ensure adequate airflow around the amplifier to prevent overheating.

8. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your amplifier, refer to the following troubleshooting guide:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
