  1. Prime: Press the primer bulb several times until fuel is visible.
  2. Choke: Move the choke lever to the FULL CHOKE position.
  3. Pull: Pull the starter rope firmly and smoothly until the engine attempts to start (usually 1-3 pulls).
  4. Once the engine attempts to start, move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position.
  5. Pull the starter rope again until the engine starts.
  6. Allow the engine to warm up for a few seconds, then move the choke lever to the RUN position.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your trimmer.

1. Trimmer Line Replacement

The bump feed trimmer head uses 0.095" twisted line. To replace the line:

  1. Ensure the engine is off and cool.
  2. Locate the bump cap on the trimmer head.
  3. To remove the bump cap, turn it clockwise for this model (WS205). If the cap is difficult to remove, applying penetrating oil and allowing it to soak may help.
  4. Remove the old line spool.
  5. Install a new spool of 0.095" twisted trimmer line, ensuring it is wound correctly according to the head's markings.
  6. Reattach the bump cap by turning it counter-clockwise until secure. Do not overtighten.

2. General Cleaning and Storage

After each use, clean the trimmer housing and cutting head to remove grass clippings and debris. Store the trimmer in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. For long-term storage, drain the fuel tank or use a fuel stabilizer.

Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your CRAFTSMAN WS205 trimmer.

Engine Does Not Start

  • Check Fuel: Ensure the fuel tank contains the correct 40:1 gasoline/oil mixture.
  • Primer Bulb: Verify the primer bulb is pressed until fuel is visible.
  • Choke Position: Confirm the choke is in the correct position for starting (FULL CHOKE, then HALF CHOKE).
  • Spark Plug: Inspect the spark plug for fouling or damage. Clean or replace if necessary.
  • Air Filter: A dirty air filter can prevent starting. Clean or replace the air filter.

Trimmer Line Does Not Feed

  • Line Tangled: Turn off the engine and inspect the trimmer head for tangled or broken line.
  • Insufficient Line: The spool may be out of line. Replace the trimmer line as described in the Maintenance section.
  • Bump Cap Issue: Ensure the bump cap is securely attached but not overtightened, allowing the bump mechanism to function.

Engine Stops During Operation

  • Fuel Level: Check if the fuel tank is empty.
  • Overheating: Allow the engine to cool down. Ensure cooling fins are clear of debris.
  • Air Filter: A clogged air filter can cause the engine to stall. Clean or replace.

If problems persist after attempting these solutions, contact CRAFTSMAN customer support or an authorized service center.
