3.2 Drilled & Slotted Brake Rotors

  • Maximum Cooling: Precision drill holes allow for optimal rotor cooling, maintaining lower brake temperatures during demanding conditions.
  • Improved Performance: Rounded slots help clear gas and debris from the pad-to-rotor contact area, ensuring consistent and smooth braking.
  • Corrosion Protection: Silver Zinc Dichromate plating is applied to all drilled & slotted rotors, providing protection against rust and corrosion.
  • OE Tolerances: Rotors are cast using fine G3000 metallurgy with strict OE tolerances for a perfect, bolt-on upgrade without modifications.

5. Installation

Installation of the Power Stop K8006 Brake Kit should be performed by a qualified technician or an individual with appropriate automotive repair experience. Always refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific torque specifications and safety procedures.

5.1 General Steps (Consult Vehicle Manual for Details)

  1. Safely lift and support the vehicle. Remove the wheels.
  2. Remove the old brake calipers, pads, and rotors.
  3. Clean the hub assembly thoroughly to ensure proper seating of the new rotor.
  4. Install the new Power Stop drilled & slotted rotors. Ensure correct left/right orientation if applicable (refer to video below).
  5. Install the new Power Stop carbon-fiber ceramic brake pads with the provided hardware and high-performance lubricant.
  6. Reinstall the calipers and secure all components to manufacturer specifications.
  7. Bleed the brake system if necessary, following your vehicle's specific procedure.
  8. Reinstall the wheels and lower the vehicle.

5.2 Important Considerations for Rotor Selection

Some vehicle models may have variations in rotor types (solid vs. vented) even within the same year. It is crucial to verify the type of rotors currently on your vehicle and order the corresponding Power Stop kit. Vented rotors have an air gap between the two friction surfaces, while solid rotors do not.

Video 1: Explanation of Solid vs. Vented Rotors. This video helps identify the correct rotor type for your vehicle, which is essential for proper kit selection.

Video 2: Guide on identifying Left vs. Right Rotors. Proper orientation is critical for optimal performance of drilled and slotted rotors.

6. Break-in Procedure (Operating)

Proper break-in of your new Power Stop brake kit is critical for optimal performance and longevity. This procedure ensures an even layer of friction material is deposited onto the rotors from the pads, preventing issues like judder and maximizing stopping power.

6.1 Break-in Steps

  1. Perform 5 moderate to aggressive stops from 40 MPH down to 10 MPH in rapid succession. Do not allow the brakes to cool between stops.
  2. During these stops, avoid coming to a complete stop. If you must stop, shift into neutral or leave ample space to allow the vehicle to roll slightly, preventing pad imprints on hot rotors.
  3. Next, perform 5 moderate stops from 35 MPH down to 5 MPH in rapid succession, again without letting the brakes cool.
  4. You may notice a burning smell; this is normal as the brakes heat up.
  5. After the stops, drive for approximately 5 minutes at a moderate speed without excessive braking or coming to a complete stop. This cooling stage allows the heated friction material to cure.
  6. Once the brakes have cooled to standard operating temperature, they are ready for normal use.

Never cool your brakes with water, as this can damage them.

7. Maintenance

Regular inspection and maintenance are crucial for the safety and performance of your braking system.

  • Routine Inspection: Periodically check brake pads for wear and rotors for signs of excessive wear, cracks, or scoring.
  • Fluid Levels: Ensure brake fluid levels are within the recommended range and replace fluid according to your vehicle manufacturer's schedule.
  • Hardware: Inspect brake hardware for corrosion or damage and replace as needed. The Power Stop kit includes premium stainless steel hardware for durability.
  • Cleaning: The low-dust formula of Z23 pads helps keep wheels clean, but regular cleaning can further maintain appearance.

8. Troubleshooting

8.1 Common Issues and Solutions

  • Brake Noise (Squealing/Grinding):
    • Ensure proper break-in procedure was followed.
    • Verify all hardware is correctly installed and lubricated.
    • Check for foreign debris between the pad and rotor.
    • Power Stop Z23 pads are designed for noise-free operation; persistent noise may indicate an installation issue or other component problem.
  • Vibration/Judder:
    • Often caused by improper break-in or uneven pad material transfer. Re-perform break-in if necessary.
    • Inspect rotors for warping or excessive run-out. Power Stop rotors are precision-made to prevent this.
    • Ensure lug nuts are torqued correctly and evenly.
  • Reduced Braking Performance:
    • Confirm proper break-in.
    • Check for air in the brake lines (requires bleeding).
    • Inspect for brake fluid leaks or worn calipers.
