1. Introduction
The BUNN Speed Brew High Altitude Coffee Maker (Model CSB3TD) is designed to provide quick and efficient coffee brewing for locations at 4,000 feet and above. It features an internal commercial-grade stainless steel hot water tank that maintains 70 ounces of water at an optimal brewing temperature, allowing for rapid brewing on demand. This model includes a vacuum-insulated, double-walled thermal carafe to keep coffee warm for extended periods.
Key features include:
- Fast Brewing: Brews a full 10-cup carafe in approximately 4 minutes, or a 20oz travel mug in 2 minutes.
- High Altitude Optimization: Specifically designed to accommodate lower boiling points at higher elevations.
- Thermal Carafe: Vacuum-insulated stainless steel carafe maintains coffee temperature for over 2 hours.
- Commercial-Style Sprayhead: Multi-stream sprayhead ensures even saturation of coffee grounds for optimal flavor extraction.
- Simple Operation: Features a pour-in bowl with a water level indicator for ease of use.
2. Setup
Initial Preparation
- Unpack all components and place the coffee maker on a flat, stable surface.
- Ensure the power switch located on the side of the unit is in the OFF position.
- Fill the thermal carafe with fresh, cold water.
- Open the lid of the coffee maker's water reservoir and pour the water from the carafe into the reservoir. Close the lid.
- Place the empty thermal carafe on the drip tray.
- Plug the coffee maker into a grounded electrical outlet.
- Turn the power switch to the ON position. The blue indicator light will illuminate.
- Allow approximately 15-20 minutes for the internal water tank to heat the water to the optimal brewing temperature. During this time, you may hear boiling sounds as the water heats.
Filter Basket Assembly
The BUNN Speed Brew requires specific BUNN coffee filters, which are taller than standard basket-style filters to prevent overflow during rapid brewing.
- Insert a BUNN coffee filter into the brew funnel.
- Add your desired amount of ground coffee to the filter. For a 10-cup brew, typically use 10 tablespoons of medium-ground coffee.
- Slide the brew funnel securely into its position under the sprayhead.

3. Operating Instructions
Brewing Coffee
Once the internal water tank is heated (indicated by the cessation of boiling sounds and the blue light remaining steady), your coffee maker is ready to brew instantly.
- Ensure the brew funnel with filter and coffee grounds is correctly inserted.
- Place the empty thermal carafe securely on the drip tray beneath the brew funnel.
- Open the water reservoir lid.
- Fill the thermal carafe with fresh, cold water to your desired brew amount (e.g., 10 cups for a full carafe, 4 cups for a smaller brew).
- Pour the water from the carafe into the coffee maker's water reservoir. The water level indicator in the pour-in bowl will show the amount added.
- Immediately close the water reservoir lid. Brewing will begin almost instantly as the cold water displaces the hot water in the internal tank.
- Allow the brewing cycle to complete. A full carafe typically brews in 4 minutes.
- Once brewing is complete, remove the carafe and serve. The thermal carafe will keep your coffee hot for over 2 hours.

4. Maintenance
Cleaning
- Carafe: The thermal carafe should be hand washed with mild soap and water. It is not dishwasher safe.
- Brew Funnel: The brew funnel can be removed and hand washed.
- Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the coffee maker with a damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
Descaling
Over time, mineral deposits can build up in the internal water tank, affecting brewing performance. Descaling is recommended every three to four months, or when you notice a slower brewing time.
- Ensure the coffee maker is cool and unplugged.
- Remove the brew funnel and carafe.
- Fill the water reservoir with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water.
- Place an empty carafe on the drip tray.
- Plug in the coffee maker and turn the power switch ON.
- Allow the solution to heat in the tank for 15-20 minutes.
- Open the water reservoir lid and pour in another carafe of plain cold water. This will initiate a brewing cycle, flushing the vinegar solution through the system.
- Repeat the plain water brewing cycle several times to ensure all vinegar residue is removed.
5. Troubleshooting
- Coffee is not brewing: Ensure the power switch is ON and the unit is plugged in. Verify that water has been added to the reservoir and the lid is fully closed.
- Lukewarm coffee: Allow sufficient time (15-20 minutes) for the internal tank to heat water after initial setup or after extended periods of non-use. If the issue persists, descaling may be required.
- Coffee grounds overflow: Always use genuine BUNN coffee filters, which are designed to be taller and prevent overflow during the rapid brewing process. Ensure the brew funnel is correctly seated.
- Water evaporation during non-use: If the coffee maker will not be used for more than 5 days, it is recommended to turn the power switch OFF to prevent excessive water evaporation from the internal tank, which could potentially damage the heating element.
