4. Setup (Installation)

Installation of the MaxMate Nerf Bars is designed to be straightforward and typically takes approximately 20 minutes per side. No drilling is required as the steps mount directly onto the vehicle's rocker panel using existing factory mounting points.

Required Tools:

  • Ratchet
  • 13mm socket
  • 1/2 inch deep well socket (or 1 inch socket for die)
  • Optional: Thread cleaning die (e.g., 25mm) for cleaning paint from factory bolts.
  • Optional: Wire brush or Dremel with steel wire brush attachment for thread cleaning.

Installation Steps:

  1. Prepare Mounting Points: Locate the factory mounting bolts on the vehicle's rocker panel. These bolts may have paint or primer covering the threads from the factory. It is recommended to clean these threads before installation to prevent cross-threading.
    • Optional: Use a thread cleaning die (e.g., 25mm) with a 1-inch socket to gently remove paint from all 18 bolts (9 per side). Alternatively, use a wire brush or Dremel with a steel wire brush attachment. Exercise caution to avoid damaging the threads.
  2. Attach Brackets: Install the six universal mounting brackets to the cleaned factory bolts using the 13mm socket. Leave the bolts slightly loose so the brackets can wobble. This allows for easier alignment in subsequent steps.
  3. Position Step Bar: Take one step bar and lay it onto the installed brackets for one side of the vehicle.
  4. Initial Fastening: Align the center hole of the step bar with the corresponding bracket. Insert a bolt into this center hole. Then, loosely insert all other bolts to connect the step bar to the remaining brackets. The step bar will still have some movement.
  5. Adjust and Tighten: Adjust the step bar's position and level as desired. Once satisfied with the alignment, progressively tighten all bolts and nuts securely.
  6. Repeat for Other Side: Follow the same steps for the opposite side of the vehicle.

Caution: Do not fully tighten any fasteners until all components are loosely assembled and properly aligned. This prevents misalignment and potential damage.

6. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and appearance of your MaxMate Nerf Bars, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Regular Cleaning: Clean the step bars regularly with mild soap and water to remove dirt, road grime, and salt. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth to prevent water spots.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the polished stainless steel finish and the UV-resistant step pads.
  • Inspect Fasteners: Periodically check all mounting bolts and nuts to ensure they remain tight. Re-tighten if necessary to maintain structural integrity.
  • Inspect Step Pads: Examine the non-slip step pads for any signs of wear, cracking, or damage. Replace if necessary to maintain safe footing.
