3. Installation

Important Safety Information: Installation should only be performed by a qualified electrician or a person with a thorough understanding of electrical wiring. Always turn off power at the circuit breaker before beginning any electrical work. Ensure the installation environment is indoors and dry.

3.1 Wiring Requirements

  • A neutral wire is required for the master switch.
  • This is a 3-way kit (two switches control the same lights). For 4-way configurations, an additional add-on switch is required.
  • The master switch cannot work with other standard 3-way switches. It must be paired with the provided add-on switch.
  • The add-on switch cannot work independently.

3.2 Wiring Diagram Overview

The master switch typically has five wires: live (black), load (red), neutral (white), ground (green), and two traveler wires (brown and blue/green). The add-on switch typically has three wires: ground (green) and two traveler wires (red and blue/green).

3.3 Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Turn Off Power: Locate your circuit breaker and turn off the power to the light switch you are replacing. Verify power is off using a voltage tester.
  2. Identify Wires: Carefully remove your existing switch(es) from the wall box. Identify the live, load, neutral, ground, and traveler wires. Label them if necessary.
  3. Connect Master Switch:
    • Connect the live wire from your wall box to the black wire of the master switch.
    • Connect the load wire (to the light fixture) to the red wire of the master switch.
    • Connect the neutral wires (from the wall box) to the white wire of the master switch.
    • Connect the ground wire (from the wall box) to the green wire of the master switch.
    • Connect the two traveler wires (from the wall box, leading to the add-on switch location) to the brown and blue/green wires of the master switch.
  4. Connect Add-on Switch:
    • Connect the ground wire (from the wall box) to the green wire of the add-on switch.
    • Connect the two traveler wires (from the wall box, coming from the master switch location) to the red and blue/green wires of the add-on switch.
  5. Secure Connections: Use the provided wire nuts to secure all connections. Ensure no bare wires are exposed.
  6. Mount Switches: Carefully push the wired switches into the wall boxes. Secure them with the provided screws.
  7. Install Wall Plates: Attach the wall plates over the switches.
  8. Restore Power: Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker.

7. Troubleshooting

7.1 Connectivity Issues

  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi: Ensure your router is broadcasting a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi signal and your phone is connected to it during setup. The switch does not support 5GHz networks.
  • Router Proximity: Place your Wi-Fi router within a reasonable range of the switch.
  • Re-pairing: If the switch loses connection, try re-pairing it with the SmartLife app. This usually involves putting the switch into pairing mode and following the app's instructions.
  • Power Cycle: Turn off the power to the switch at the circuit breaker for a few minutes, then restore power. This can resolve minor connectivity glitches.

7.2 Wiring Error Alarm & Protection

The switch is equipped with a wiring error alarm and protection features. If the switch does not function after installation, or if an alarm is triggered, immediately turn off the power and re-check all wiring connections against the provided diagrams. Incorrect wiring can prevent operation or cause damage.

7.3 Over Temperature Protection

The device includes over-temperature protection to prevent overheating. If the switch becomes excessively hot, it may automatically shut down. Ensure proper ventilation and that the connected load does not exceed the specified wattage limits (400W INC, 150W LED/CFL).
