Setup

1. Connecting the Phone

  1. Connect the Handset: Plug one end of the coiled handset cord into the jack on the bottom left side of the phone base and the other end into the jack on the handset.
  2. Connect the Telephone Line: Plug one end of the telephone line cord into the TEL LINE jack on the back of the phone base and the other end into a telephone wall jack. If you have DSL service, you may need to use a DSL filter (not included).
  3. Connect the Power Adapter: Plug the small end of the AC power adapter into the POWER jack on the back of the phone base. Plug the large end into a standard electrical outlet.

2. Initial Setup and Language Selection

Upon first power-up, the phone may prompt you to select a language for the display menu. Use the navigation buttons (CID ▼ or DIR ▲) to scroll through English, Spanish, or French, then press MENU/SELECT to confirm your choice.

3. Wall Mounting (Optional)

The AT&T CL4940 is designed for both desk and wall mounting. To wall mount, you will need a standard wall mounting plate (not included) and follow the instructions provided with the plate to secure the phone to the wall.

Operating Instructions

Making and Receiving Calls

  • To Make a Call: Lift the handset or press the SPEAKER button, then dial the number.
  • To Receive a Call: Lift the handset or press the SPEAKER button when the phone rings.
  • To End a Call: Place the handset back on the base or press the SPEAKER button again if using speakerphone.

Answering System Operation

The integrated digital answering system records incoming messages when you are away or unable to answer the phone.

  • Turning On/Off: Press the ANS ON/OFF button to activate or deactivate the answering system. The ANS ON indicator light will illuminate when active.
  • Playing Messages: Press the PLAY/STOP button to listen to new messages. The message counter on the display will show the number of new messages.
  • Skipping Messages: During playback, press SKIP to advance to the next message.
  • Repeating Messages: During playback, press REPEAT to replay the current message. Press it twice quickly to go back to the previous message.
  • Deleting Messages: During playback, press the DELETE X button to erase the current message.
  • Call Screening/Intercept: While a message is being recorded, you can listen to the incoming message through the speaker. To answer the call, simply lift the handset.

Caller ID and Call Waiting

This phone supports Caller ID and Call Waiting services (subscription required from your telephone service provider).

  • Viewing Caller ID History: Press CID ▼ or DIR ▲ to scroll through the 50-name/number Caller ID history.
  • Dialing from Caller ID: When viewing a Caller ID entry, press the dial pad buttons to modify the number if needed, then lift the handset or press SPEAKER to dial.
  • Call Waiting: If you subscribe to Call Waiting, a tone will alert you to an incoming call while you are on the phone. Press FLASH to switch between calls.

Other Features

  • Volume Control: Use the VOLUME ▲/▼ buttons to adjust the speakerphone or handset volume during a call. The ringer volume can be adjusted via the menu.
  • Mute: Press MUTE during a call to temporarily silence your microphone. Press again to unmute.
  • Last Number Redial: Press PAUSE/REDIAL to redial the last number called.
  • Equalizer: Press the EQUALIZER button during a call to adjust the audio tone for clearer sound.
  • Audio Assist: Press the AUDIO ASSIST button for enhanced audio clarity.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Clean the phone with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Avoid Water: Do not expose the phone to water or excessive moisture.
  • Temperature: Store the phone in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Power Outages: The phone operates on line power mode, meaning basic functions (making/receiving calls) may still work during a power outage, but features like the answering system and backlit display will not. The Message Guard® memory retains recorded messages during power failures.

Troubleshooting
