Safety Information

CAUTION: Risk of Electric Shock.

  • Before installing, servicing, or removing the outlet, read and follow all safety precautions.
  • More than one disconnect switch may be required to de-energize the equipment before servicing. A circuit breaker which disconnects the Line and Neutral conductor simultaneously is suitable. Ensure power is off at the circuit breaker before removing or installing any outlet. Use a non-contact voltage tester to ensure the power is off.
  • The Smart Outlet must be installed and used in accordance with the National Electric Code (NEC) or your local electrical code. If you are unfamiliar with these codes and requirements, or are uncomfortable performing the installation, consult a qualified electrician.
  • Do not install the Smart Outlet with wet hands or when standing on wet or damp surfaces.
  • Install only in a suitable UL Listed outlet box (suitable dimensions: H > 2.95 in/75 mm, W > 1.81 in/46 mm, D > 3.15 in/80 mm).
  • Tighten terminal screws to 13 lbf-in.

Setup and Installation

1. Physical Installation

Before beginning, ensure the power is turned off at the circuit breaker for the outlet you intend to replace. Use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm the power is off. The Kasa Smart Plug KP200 requires a neutral wire for proper operation.

  1. Remove the Old Outlet: Turn off power at the circuit breaker. Remove your old wallplate and gently pull the outlet out.
  2. Disconnect the Wires: Disconnect the wires from your old outlet.
  3. Connect the New Wires: Connect wires to the terminals of the new outlet. The KP200 has clearly labeled terminals for Line (black wire), Neutral (white wire), and Ground (bare copper or green wire). Ensure all connections are secure.
  4. Secure the New Outlet: Gently push the wired smart outlet back into the wall box. Secure it using the provided screws. Attach the new wallplate.

Maintenance

To ensure optimal performance and longevity of your Kasa Smart Plug KP200, follow these simple maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Disconnect power to the outlet before cleaning. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the surface. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the finish or internal components.
  • Environmental Conditions: Ensure the outlet is used within its specified operating temperature (32°F-104°F / 0°C-40°C) and humidity (10%-90%RH, non-condensing) ranges. Avoid exposing the device to extreme temperatures or high humidity.
  • Regular Checks: Periodically check the outlet for any signs of damage, loose connections, or unusual behavior. If any issues are observed, discontinue use and consult a qualified electrician or Kasa Smart support.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Kasa Smart Plug KP200, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power:
    • Verify that the circuit breaker for the outlet is in the ON position.
    • Ensure the wiring connections are secure and correct (Line, Neutral, Ground). If unsure, consult a qualified electrician.
  • Cannot Connect to Wi-Fi:
    • Ensure your Wi-Fi network is 2.4 GHz, as the KP200 does not support 5 GHz networks.
    • Check that the Wi-Fi signal strength at the outlet's location is adequate.
    • Restart your Wi-Fi router and try the setup process again.
    • Perform a factory reset on the smart outlet (refer to the Kasa Smart app for instructions on how to reset the device).
  • App Control Issues:
    • Ensure your smartphone is connected to the internet.
    • Verify that the Kasa Smart app is updated to the latest version.
    • Check if the smart outlet's firmware is up to date via the app settings.
