Setup and Installation

  1. Prepare the Clock Case: Ensure your clock case or mounting surface has a suitable opening for the movement. The mounting diameter for the movement is 120 mm. The maximum dial thickness supported is 9 mm.
  2. Insert the Movement: Carefully insert the Hermle 2214 movement into the clock case from the rear.
  3. Secure the Movement: Use the provided central screw to secure the movement firmly in place. The installation is designed to be very simple with this single screw.
  4. Attach the Speaker: Connect the speaker to the movement using its clip-on side mount. Position the speaker appropriately within the clock case for optimal sound projection.
  5. Install Hands: Mount the hour, minute, and second hands onto the hand shafts. The hand shaft length is 17.5 mm (15 mm without the second hand). Ensure the hands are aligned correctly at the 12 o'clock position before securing them. Use the hand nut if required.
  6. Insert Batteries: The movement requires one 1.5V AA battery (not included). Open the battery compartment, insert the battery according to the polarity markings (+/-), and close the compartment.
  7. Set the Time: Use the time-setting knob on the back of the movement to set the correct time. Rotate the knob clockwise until the desired time is displayed.
  8. Synchronize Chimes (if applicable): If your clock has chimes, it may be necessary to synchronize the chime with the time. This typically involves setting the time to 12:00, allowing the chime to strike, and then adjusting the minute hand to the correct time. Refer to the operation section for detailed chime settings.

Operation

Setting the Time

To set the time, gently turn the time-setting knob located on the back of the movement. Always turn the knob clockwise to advance the hands. Avoid turning the hands directly, as this may damage the mechanism.

Chime Selection

Your Hermle 2214 movement offers two chime melodies. A selector switch on the movement allows you to choose between:

  • Westminster Chime: Plays a full 4/4 melody and counts the hours.
  • Bim Bam Chime: Strikes once at the half-hour and counts the hours at the full hour.

Volume Control

The chime volume can be adjusted using the volume control switch. Available settings are 100% (full volume), 50% (reduced volume), and 0% (silent mode). Select the desired volume level according to your preference.

Night Volume Reduction

The movement includes a feature to reduce the chime volume during nighttime hours. Consult the specific markings on your movement for the night mode setting. This feature automatically lowers the volume or silences the chime during a predefined period, typically from 10 PM to 5 AM.

Maintenance

Battery Replacement

When the clock begins to lose time, the chimes become weak, or the movement stops, it is time to replace the battery. Open the battery compartment, remove the old 1.5V AA battery, and insert a new one, ensuring correct polarity. Dispose of used batteries responsibly.

General Care

Keep the movement free from dust and moisture. Do not attempt to lubricate the movement, as it is designed to operate without additional lubrication. Avoid exposing the clock to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight, which can affect battery life and movement accuracy.
