BUNN CSB3TD Speed Brew High Altitude Coffee Maker

Model: CSB3TD

1. Introduction

The BUNN CSB3TD Speed Brew High Altitude Coffee Maker is engineered for efficiency and quality, providing hot coffee rapidly. Its unique design includes an internal commercial-grade stainless steel hot water tank, ensuring water is always at the ideal brewing temperature. This manual will guide you through the proper use and care of your new coffee maker.

This model is specifically designed to accommodate the lower boiling points found in high-altitude locations (4,000 ft and above), ensuring optimal brewing performance regardless of elevation.

2. Setup

Before first use, it is essential to properly set up your coffee maker to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove all packaging materials and place the coffee maker on a flat, stable surface.
  2. Initial Rinse: Fill the carafe with fresh, cold water. Open the lid of the coffee maker and pour the water into the reservoir. Close the lid.
  3. Power On: Plug the coffee maker into a grounded electrical outlet. Turn on the power switch, typically located on the side or back of the unit. The internal tank will begin heating the water. Allow approximately 15-20 minutes for the water to reach the optimal temperature.
  4. First Brew Cycle (without coffee): Once the water is heated, place the empty carafe on the warming plate (if applicable, though this model uses a thermal carafe). Open the lid and pour another carafe of fresh, cold water into the reservoir. Close the lid. This will initiate a brewing cycle, flushing out any manufacturing residues. Discard this water.

3. Operating Instructions

Your BUNN Speed Brew coffee maker is designed for quick and efficient brewing. Ensure the power switch is always on to keep the internal tank heated for instant brewing.

  1. Prepare the Filter Basket: Insert a BUNN-specific coffee filter (or a standard 10-12 cup filter, noting BUNN filters are slightly taller for optimal flow) into the brew funnel.
  2. Add Coffee Grounds: Add your desired amount of coffee grounds to the filter. For best results, use fresh, medium-grind coffee.
  3. Place Carafe: Ensure the stainless steel thermal carafe is properly positioned under the brew funnel.
  4. Add Water to Reservoir: Open the lid of the coffee maker. Slowly pour fresh, cold water into the reservoir using the carafe. The pour-in bowl features a water level indicator to show the amount added.
  5. Initiate Brewing: Close the lid firmly. The brewing process will begin immediately as the hot water from the internal tank is displaced.
  6. Brewing Time: The Speed Brew technology allows for rapid brewing: approximately 2 minutes for a 20oz travel mug and about 4 minutes for a full 10-cup (50oz) carafe.
  7. Enjoy: Once brewing is complete, remove the carafe and serve. The vacuum-insulated thermal carafe will maintain the coffee's ideal serving temperature for over 2 hours without a heating plate.

4. Maintenance

Regular cleaning and maintenance will ensure your BUNN coffee maker continues to perform at its best.

  • Daily Cleaning: After each use, discard used coffee grounds and filter. Rinse the brew funnel and thermal carafe with warm water.
  • Carafe Cleaning: The stainless steel thermal carafe should be hand washed with mild soap and water. Do not place the carafe on any type of warming burner, as this can damage it.
  • Exterior Cleaning: Wipe the exterior of the coffee maker with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.
  • Descaling: Depending on your water hardness, periodic descaling may be necessary to prevent mineral buildup in the internal tank. Refer to the detailed user manual (PDF) for specific descaling instructions.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter any issues with your coffee maker, please refer to the following common solutions:

  • Coffee Not Hot Enough: Ensure the coffee maker's power switch is always on. The internal tank needs to remain heated to provide instant hot water for brewing. If the unit is turned off, it will take approximately 15-20 minutes to heat up.
  • Slow Brewing: Check if the internal hot water tank is full and heated. If the unit was recently plugged in or turned on, allow sufficient time for the water to heat. Also, ensure the brew funnel is not clogged with excessive grounds.
  • Overflowing Grounds: Use the recommended BUNN filters, which are designed to be slightly taller to prevent grounds from overflowing during the rapid brewing process. Do not overfill the filter basket with coffee grounds.
  • No Water Dispensing: Verify that the reservoir has been filled with water and the lid is fully closed. The lid closing mechanism triggers the brewing cycle.
  • Plastic Smell/Taste: During initial uses, a slight plastic smell may be present. This is normal and should dissipate after a few brewing cycles. Ensure you perform the initial rinse cycles as described in the Setup section.
