3. Setup

3.1 Unpacking and Initial Inspection

Carefully remove the guitar from its gig bag and packaging. Inspect the instrument for any visible damage that may have occurred during shipping. Ensure all components, including the gig bag, are present.

3.2 Tuning the Guitar

Your D-12E is equipped with Fishman MX-T electronics, which include a built-in tuner. To use the tuner:

  1. Press the tuner button on the preamp to activate it. The display will illuminate.
  2. Pluck each string individually. The display will show the note being played and indicate if it is sharp or flat.
  3. Adjust the corresponding tuning machine head until the display indicates the string is in tune (typically a green light or centered needle).
  4. Repeat for all six strings (E, A, D, G, B, E).
  5. Press the tuner button again to deactivate the tuner.

For optimal performance, ensure the guitar is tuned to standard pitch (EADGBe) or your preferred alternate tuning.

3.3 String Action and Intonation

The string action (height of strings above the fretboard) and intonation are factory-set. If you experience buzzing, difficulty playing, or notes that are out of tune higher up the neck, a professional setup by a qualified guitar technician is recommended. Adjustments to the truss rod, saddle, or nut should only be performed by experienced individuals.

4. Operating

4.1 Acoustic Playback

The D-12E is designed to deliver a rich acoustic tone. Experiment with different strumming and picking techniques to explore its full dynamic range. The Dreadnought body provides strong bass response and projection.

4.2 Using Fishman MX-T Electronics

The Fishman MX-T preamp system allows you to amplify your guitar for live performance or recording. It features controls for Volume, Tone, and a built-in Tuner.

  • Volume Control: Adjusts the overall output level of the amplified signal. Start with a low setting and gradually increase to avoid feedback.
  • Tone Control: Shapes the amplified sound. Turn clockwise for brighter tones and counter-clockwise for warmer, darker tones.
  • Tuner Button: Activates and deactivates the built-in chromatic tuner (refer to Section 3.2). When the tuner is active, the output signal is muted.

4.3 Connecting to an Amplifier or PA System

Connect a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable from the guitar's endpin jack to your amplifier or PA system input. Ensure your amplifier or mixer is set to a clean, acoustic-friendly channel. Adjust the guitar's volume and tone controls, along with your amplifier's settings, to achieve your desired sound.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning the Guitar

  • Body: Wipe the body with a soft, lint-free cloth after each use to remove fingerprints and sweat. For deeper cleaning, use a guitar-specific polish sparingly.
  • Fretboard: Periodically clean the Richlite fretboard with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Strings: Wipe down strings after playing to extend their life and maintain tone.

5.2 String Replacement

Strings should be replaced regularly, depending on playing frequency and personal preference. Old strings can sound dull and affect intonation. When replacing strings, change them one at a time to maintain neck tension. Use light gauge acoustic guitar strings for optimal performance on the D-12E.

5.3 Humidity Control

Acoustic guitars are sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. Maintain a relative humidity level between 45-55% to prevent wood warping, cracking, or other damage. Use a guitar humidifier in dry environments and avoid exposing the guitar to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight.

5.4 Storage

When not in use, store your guitar in its included gig bag or a hardshell case to protect it from dust, impacts, and environmental changes.
